Compulsories is a contest category whereby lists of tricks are to be performed to completion. A scoring system involving points would be paired with it. In older decades of yoyoing during the 1900s yoyo contests were about who could complete these set tricks better than their competitors. During the 2000's decade, they were used as a qualifying round to make it to the final Freestyle round of a contest. Unlike the Sport Ladder, this list of tricks were all meant to be in the same neighborhood in their amplitude and difficulty for their era of time. The system would start with only A and AA divisions but would eventually grow into 1A through 5A divisions at the World YoYo Contest. The compulsory system has been discontinued at nearly all major contests in favor of preliminary freestyles circa 2007.

Usually the system would be based on points. If trick was completed to satisfaction first attempt, you would be awarded 5 points, missing on first attempt and completing the second attempt would score 3 points, missing both attempts yielded 0. Then repeat that for a predetermined set of 10 tricks for a lowest score of 0 or highest score of 50 overall. Usually players would be scoring over 40 to make it to finals of the World Yo-Yo Contest, but also was about the same rule of thumb but little less competitive to qualify in National or Regional contests, that cutoff varied widely depending on year, division, turnout, skillset, and trickset and ruleset of that contest.

The Compulsory Trickset would vary in the early modern age of yoyoing as classic tricks became established and contests where trying to keep up with the accelerating yoyo scene trickwise. The focal driver for tricksets in all other contests stemmed from the World YoYo Contest Compulsory list, which its full history and rulesets is documented below.

The Perfect 50 Club[]

Since modern Compulsories had 10 tricks each and 5 points first try means that hitting all the tricks first try makes a perfect score of 50. This has been done at the World Yoyo Contest by several people, it was decently uncommon to see but not that rare, this perfect run got you into this select unofficial club list.

2000 World YoYo Contest Trickset[]

Contest Rules from original site:

The top 10 contestants will be able to do a 3 minute freestyle.

We would like to take the time to thank the creators of Kens World on a String, Sector Y and Shawns Guide to Looping for the use of their images/tricks/videos. The original page was compiled by Citadel.

  1. All tricks performed on first attempt receive 5 points. A successful second attempt, if necessary, receives 3 points.
  2. The yo-yo must be caught with one hand and not trapped against the body.
  3. If more than five inches of string remains outside either or both yo-yo(s) when caught, it is considered a miss.
  4. All yo-yos must be able to at all times sleep a minimum of 3 seconds, the judge may request to test any yo-yo at any time.
  5. Any throw made while in the trick circle (or Box) counts as a try.
  6. Only the following tricks may be done while the contestant is on deck (on stage but outside the trick ring): Throwdown, spinner, forward pass, a single Loop the Loop, or string adjustments. Practicing a contest trick outside the circle or box once the contest starts shall count as a miss.
  7. While outside the trick box, yo-yo string can be adjusted manually, or re-looped. Unintentionally broken or knotted strings may be replaced.
  8. If the contestants feet leaves the trick box during a trick, a miss is considered to have taken place at that moment.
  9. Any yo-yo(s) may be used for this division. The same yo-yo(s) must be used for all tricks.
  10. The judge(s) decision is final and not subject to appeal.

1A Compulsory List[]

  1. Zipper (Mark McBrides version) (3 reps)
  2. Triple Trapeze Trapeze, regenerate into another Trapeze, regenerate into another trapeze. To be performed exactly as seen in video. No flip-overs, fly away dismount. Performing this trick is exactly how it looks, it just takes a lot of practice.
  3. Mach 5, Boing-E-Boing, Mach 5 Two Mach 5 revolutions, 3 Boing-E-Boings (back and forth counts as one Boing), then two full Mach 5 revolutions, dismount. To be performed exactly as seen in video(Videos lost and no longer hosted, need to find these back).
  4. Kwijibo
  5. Boomerang (w/ Chain Reaction to Atom Smasher ending) 3 Boomerangs (last Boomerang comes back into a split bottom), chain reaction, Atom Smasher (two underpasses, two somersaults). To be performed exactly as seen in video.
  6. Skin the Gerbil To be performed exactly as seen in video.
  7. Pop n' Fresh 2 reps required, back and forth counts as one rep. To be performed exactly as seen in video.
  8. Fountain 3 Hop the Fences, 3 Punching Bags, 3 Vertical Punching Bags. There are a total of 9, and only 9, punches (3 from each).
  9. Shoot the Moon Stalls (10 reps) Instructions for regular (non-stall) Shoot the Moons may be found at Shawn's Guide to Looping. View video to learn Shoot the Moon Stalls. 10 Reps
  10. Warp Drive to Time Warp To be performed exactly as seen in video. Starts with a loop, Around the World, regeneration loop into another Around the World, regeneration punch (as in punching bags) into reverse Around the World. Failure to start with a loop will cause your attempt to be counted as a miss.

Tiebreakers

  1. Eli Hops (5 hops). 5 reps required. Height of each hop must contain a majority of the string (i.e., no baby hops). Must end in fly-away dismount. To be performed exactly as seen in video.
  2. Hop in the Bucket. (Eli hops in the bucket 3- hops) Essentially Eli Hops inside a "Drop in the Bucket."\
  3. Vertical Punch-Off (Vertical Punching Bags) You will do as many vertical punching bags (not loops) as you can. Because this is a tie breaker, the more you do, the better. The video depicts a way (not necessarily the way) to start, three vertical punches, and a catch.

2A Compulsory List[]

  1. 2 Handed Outside Criss Crossing Loops (15 reps) The first loops with each hand must be outside loops. The yo-yos trajectories must cross on the first loops and must stay crossed for all 15 repetitions.
  2. Spread Eagle Warp Drive Must start with alternating side loop regenerations into an Around the World followed by two more side loop regenerations into an Around the World. The Around the World trajectories must cross, behind the back, on all three repetitions. The yo-yos must be caught after the third Around the World with each hand. If a contestant throws an additional loop with either hand, before the catch, it will be considered a miss.
  3. Chinese Jump Rope (as seen on SuperYo video) (5 Complete Hops)You can start you looping hand going, and then start your hopping. You can do as many loops as you want. Hop the Fence back and forth over the hand that is looping. A complete jump rope hop is a Hop the Fence in front of you followed by a Hop the Fence over the loops. Each additional repetition starts with a Hop the Fence in front of you followed by a Hop the Fence over the loops. The contestant may do no more than two Hop the Fences in front before he or she starts to hop over the hand that is looping.
  4. Sword and Shield This trick must start with an Around the World and end after the forth Around the World. The loops must start during the first Around the World and at least one loop must pass through the trajectory of each of the four Around the Worlds. The looping yo-yo must be caught before or at the same time as the last Around the World yo-yo is caught. The contestant must catch the Around the World yo-yo before completing a fifth (5) revolution. In other words you can do 4 & 1/2 or even 4 & 3/4 revolutions of Around the World but not five (5). Also if a player continues to loop after the Around the World is caught it will be considered a missed trick. Note that the count on the Around the World starts as the yo-yo passes by the feet of the player.
  5. Criss Crossing Punching Bag (10 Reps) The yo-yo trajectories must cross on the first punches and must stay crossed for all ten repetitions. Starting with the first punches, the yo-yo trajectories must be above 45 degrees and below 135 degrees as measured from an imaginary vertical line from the player hand to the ground. In other words, you must start with "legal" crossing Punching Bags with each hand and stay "legal" and crossed for all 10 repetitions. In addition, a yo-yo may not turn over on its side more than 45 degrees from a vertical plane.
  6. Windshield Wipers (5 reps) - Jon Gates version: Simultaneously, starting from either the right or left side, a breakaway is thrown with one hand while a reverse breakaway is thrown with the other hand. When the yo-yos get to the other side they are simultaneously regenerated into another breakaway (or reverse breakaway.) This cycle constitutes one repetition. Continue to regenerate these simultaneous "breakaways" eight more times to complete the five repetitions. Slight breaks in the simultaneous timing of the breakaways will be acceptable.
  7. 2 Hand Reach for the Moon Stalls (5 Reps) Each repetition consists of a Reach for the Moon, followed by an outward hop over the wrist (like a Hop the Fence), straight down and back up to contact with the palm of the hand. The yo-yo must contact the palm of the hand but may not be caught before each regeneration into Reach for the Moon. After the last repetition with each hand, the yo-yo is caught as it completes the Hop the fence.
  8. Cow Jumping Over the Moon (10 reps) Reach for the Moon with one hand and Hop the Fence with the other. Count starts with first complete Reach for the Moon after Hop the Fence has commenced. The most efficient way to do this trick is to start Hop the Fence with one yo-yo and then throw your Reach for the Moon yo-yo.
  9. Behind the Back Cattle Crossing (5 Reps) Yo-Yo trajectories may start crossed or uncrossed. The count starts when the yo-yo trajectories start to cross behind the back. Once the yo-yo trajectories cross, they must stay crossed during all five repetitions. The yo-yos may be caught behind the back or brought back to the front or side before catching. However, during the trick and prior to the catch, all of the "Hop the Fences" with each hand must be "Inside" Hop the Fences and none may be "Outside" Hop the Fences.
  10. Staircase (also called Tornado and Circular Fountain) Starts with 2-handed Milk the Cow to one side and works it's way up to vertical loops (vertical punches) while the player rotates 360 degrees ending with 3 full vertical loops after both feet are planted. In other word the player starts facing forward, and ends up facing forward after one complete revolution. The trick ends when the player has completed 3 repetitions of vertical loops after his feet are firmly planted. The yo-yo trajectories must be near horizontal at 180 degrees and fully vertical at 360 degrees. Once the player has started the 360 degree turn they can not stop the turning until the full revolution is completed. The player should attempt to stay in the trick box but will not be penalized if they do step out during or after the turn.

Tiebreakers

  • Double Reps starting at trick 7 through trick 9 and back to 7 if necessary.

2001[]

  • All tricks successfully performed on first attempt receive 5 points. A successful second attempt receives 3 points.
  • The yo-yo must be caught with one hand and not trapped against the body.
  • If more than five inches of string remains outside the yo-yo when caught, it is considered a miss.
  • All yo-yos must be able to at all times sleep a minimum of 3 seconds, the judge may request to test any yo-yo at any time.
  • A trick box will be drawn with tape, ink or other means. The box is the space inside the line or tape and does not include the thickness of the line or tape.
  • Any throw made while in the trick box counts as a try.
  • All tricks must be done while the contestant is standing with both feet in the trick box. Any throw while standing outside the box will not count as an attempt.
  • Only the following tricks may be done while the contestant is on deck as the current contestant (on stage but outside the trick box): Throwdown, spinner, forward pass, a single Loop the Loop, or string adjustments. Practicing a contest trick or performing tricks other than those specifically allowed outside the trick box while on deck as the current contestant shall count as a miss.
  • While outside the trick box, yo-yo string can be adjusted manually, or re-looped. Unintentionally broken or knotted strings may be replaced with strings of the same length.
  • If the contestant's feet (both) leave the trick box during a trick, a miss is considered to have taken place at that moment.
  • Any yo-yos may be used for this division. The same yo-yos must be used for all tricks.
  • Shortening the string by winding it around a hand, finger, bunching it up in one's hand, or by other techniques that intend to shorten the string substantially for the purpose of making the tricks easier will not be allowed. All tricks must be performed using the full length of the string.
  • Additional reps of a trick will be allowed as long as the tricks completion is clean. This will allow you to loop an extra time or two to insure you have counted the reps of a trick properly. See the faq for more information and examples on when this is not allowed.
  • The judge(s) decision is final.
  • All judging will be done live, video replay will not used.
  • Any contestant that is not being judged who interrupts or interferes with another contestants performance can be disqualified.

1A Compulsory List[]

  1. Boomerang (w/ Chain Reaction to Atom Smasher ending) [demonstrated by Glasseye]: Must start with a bottom mount followed by one Brain Twister somersault, then unwind from Brain Twister into first of 3 Boomerangs (the last Boomerang comes back into a split bottom), chain reaction, Atom Smasher (two underpasses, two somersaults), end with a "Skin the Cat" loop dismount. To be performed exactly as seen in video.
  2. Eli Hops (5 hops or reps) [demonstrated by Felix Avellana]: Start with trapeze mount and perform 5 hops (or pops). Hands must touch during each hop. Must end with a flyaway dismount. To be performed exactly as seen in video.
  3. Double Triple Trapeze [Felix Avellana]: Trapeze, regenerate into five additional Trapezes. To be performed exactly as seen in video. No flip-overs allowed. Must end with a flyaway dismount. Performing this trick is exactly how it looks, it just takes a lot of practice.
  4. Mach 5 Boing-E-Boing Mach 5 [James Lac]: Split bottom mount directly into a Mach 5 hold (no string shortening somersaults allowed). Perform three Mach 5 revolutions, followed by 5 Boing-E-Boings (back and forth counts as one Boing), then perform three more full Mach 5 revolutions, end with a "Skin the Cat" loop dismount. To be performed exactly as seen in video.
  5. Kwyjibo [Glasseye]: Trapeze mount/ pop to wrist crossed double or nothing/ roll wrist over/ pop to double or nothing/ pop to trapeze/ end with a flyaway dismount.
  6. Double Skin the Gerbil [Felix Avellana]: Full momentum Trapeze mount into an inside somersault continuing into a Lindy Loop, then unwind the Lindy Loop with an outside reverse somersault into a reverse Lindy Loop. Unwind the reverse Lindy Loop and intentionally miss landing a Lindy Loop and land it on the flip over. Unwind the Lindy loop and go directly into a second full Skin the Gerbil ending with a flyaway dismount. To be performed exactly as seen in video.
  7. Pop n' Fresh (4 reps) [Felix Avellana]: Split bottom mount directly into a mach 5 hold (no string shortening somersaults allowed) perform a pop catch followed by a fresh catch. Repeat three more pop catch/fresh catch combinations and end with a "Skin the Cat" loop dismount. To be performed exactly as seen in video. This is a total of 8 string catches.
  8. Hop in the Bucket (3 hops) [Felix Avellana]: Three Eli type hops in the bucket. Then hop yo-yo to the string furthest from the body into a trapeze and end with a flyaway dismount. In other words do three hops in a "Drop in the Bucket."
  9. Suicide (2 reps) [Glasseye]: Trapeze mount, two suicide catches, ending with a flyaway dismount. All throws must be from a trapeze over the index finger and caught on the index finger.
  10. Buddha's Fusion [Glasseye]: Start with a "one and a half mount" and Perform two reps of Buddha1s Revenge, then from the "one and a half mount hold", cross throw hand under freehand and pop to Double or Nothing. From the Double or Nothing position perform the two string transfers of Cold Fusion, then toss yo-yo over and onto Free Hand index finger then toss back over onto Throw Hand index finger and perform one Pin Wheel then unwind and perform a Snag catch and end with a flyaway dismount.

1A Tiebreakers

In the event of a tie, the tie will be broken using the following tricks

  1. Double Kwijibo: From the trapeze catch on the first Kwijibo continue directly into a second Kwijibo as described in trick # 4.
  2. Boing-E-Boing (10 reps): Split bottom mount directly into Boings without any somersaults ending with a "Skin the Cat" loop dismount.
  3. Suicide (4 reps): 4 reps as describe in trick #9.
  4. Eli Hops (10 hops): 10 reps as described in trick #1.
  5. Hop in the Bucket (6 reps): 6 reps as describe in trick #8.
  6. Most Suicides on one throw. Repeat this trick if necessary until tie is broken.

The order of tiebreakers 1-5 will be announced on the day of the event.

A Single Handed: Tie Breaking Procedure

  • The tie breaking method will be sudden death. Sudden death means, if you miss a trick and are no longer tied for a remaining position you are eliminated.
  • The order of the first five tiebreaker tricks will be announced on the day of the contest.
  • The first five (5) tiebreaker tricks will be performed, one at a time, until the tie is broken.
  • If two or more tied contestants miss the same trick, the trick will be repeated. If the tied competitors all miss the trick on the second attempt, the one(s) completing the most repetitions successfully will be the winner(s) or will continue in the tiebreaker process if a tie still exists.
  • If two or more tied contestants miss the trick and complete the same number of repetitions they will proceed to a first attempt on the next trick in the tie breaking process.
  • If a tie still exists after two or more contestants successfully complete the first five tricks, the sixth and final tiebreaker trick will be used to break the tie. This last tiebreaker will be repeated as many times as necessary to break the tie.

Example:

Five (5) contestants are tied for two (2) remaining positions in the freestyle finals.

Three (3) contestants successfully perform the first tiebreaker trick and the other two (2) fail in their attempt. The "sudden death" rule means the two (2) contestants that missed the trick are eliminated while the other three(3) proceed to the next tiebreaker trick.

If one of the remaining three contestants makes the next trick while the other two miss, the successful contestant qualifies for the freestyle finals. The other two contestants that missed the trick will be given a second attempt to make the same trick.

2A Compulsory List[]

  1. Outside Criss-Crossing Loops(20 reps) [demonstrated by Felix Avellana]: The first Loops with each hand must be Outside Loops. The yo-yos trajectories must cross on the first Loops and must stay crossed for all 20 repetitions. Slight corkscrewing of the yo-yos will be allowed providing the Loops stay in well-formed and consistent trajectories.
  2. Spread Eagle Warp Drive(5 reps) [demonstrated by Patrick Mitchell]: Each hand ust start with a side loop regeneration into an Around the World followed by four more side loop regenerations into an Around the World. The Around the World trajectories must cross, behind the back, on all five repetitions. The yo-yos must be caught after the fifth Around the World with each hand. If a contestant throws an additional loop with either hand, before the catch, it will be considered a miss.
  3. Criss-Cross Loops with Transitions to Vertical Punches and Milk the Cow [Patrick Mitchell]: Start with at least five Criss-Cross Loops, then punch to retro half-world transitions up into at least 5 Vertical Punches, then punch down through the Punching Bag position into at least five Milk The Cows.
  4. Sword and Shield [Eugene Han]: This trick must start with an Around the World and end after at least five Around the Worlds. The Loops must start during the first Around the World and at least one Loop must pass through the trajectory of each of the first five Around the Worlds.
  5. Criss Crossing Punching Bag (15 Reps) [Felix Avellana]: The yo-yo trajectories must cross on the first Punches and must stay crossed for all 15 repetitions. Starting with the first Punches, the yo-yo trajectories must be above 45 degrees and below 135 degrees as measured from an imaginary vertical line from the player hand to the ground. In other words, you must start with "legal" crossing Punching Bags with each hand and stay "legal" and crossed for all 15 repetitions. In addition, a yo-yo may not turn over on its side more than 45 degrees from a vertical plane.
  6. Windshield Wipers (5 reps) - Jon Gates version [Patrick Mitchell]: Simultaneously, starting from either the right or left side, a Breakaway is thrown with one hand while a Reverse Breakaway is thrown with the other hand.
  7. Inside/Outside Vertical Punches (10 reps) [Patrick Mitchell]: You can start by throwing the yo-yos directly upward into Inside Vertical Punches or you may start them from a Forward Pass/Reach for the Moon start. You may do one or more Inside Vertical Punches with each hand but as soon as one Outside Vertical Punch is thrown the second hand must also start alternating Inside/Outside Vertical Punches until 10 repetitions are complete. Each repetition consists of one Inside Vertical Punch and one Outside Vertical Punch. Therefore each hand is performing 10 Inside Vertical Punches and 10 Outside Vertical Punches. The count will be made on the second hand after each Outside Vertical Punch
  8. Combined Inside/Outside Reach for the Moon (10 reps) [Patrick Mitchell]: Similar to two-hand Reach for the Moon, however the yo-yos must alternate from inside of each throw hand on the upward vertical tosses to the outside of each throw hand on the downward trajectory. As the yo-yo descends it is thrown out and upward with an Outside Loop to complete the first repetition. As the yo-yo returns a second inside upward toss is made as in a standard Reach for the Moon and again as the yo-yo descends it is thrown out and upward with an Outside Loop to complete the second repetition. The count will be made on the second hand after each Outside Loop. (Please Note that the above video only shows 5 repetitions of the trick as opposed to the required 10 for the contest.)
  9. Behind the Back Cattle Crossing (10 Reps) [Felix Avellana]: Yo-Yo trajectories may start crossed or uncrossed. The count starts when the yo-yo trajectories start to cross behind the back. Once the yo-yo trajectories cross, they must stay crossed during all 10 repetitions. The yo-yos may be caught behind the back or brought back to the front or side before catching. However, during the trick and prior to the catch, all of the "Hop the Fences" with each hand must be "Inside" Hop the Fences and none may be "Outside" Hop the Fences.
  10. Staircase (also called Tornado and Circular Fountain) [Kalani Bergdorf]: Starts with 2-handed Milk the Cow to one side and works it's way up to Vertical Punches while the player rotates 360 degrees1 ending with 3 full Vertical Punches after both feet are planted. In other words, the player starts facing forward, and ends up facing forward after one complete revolution. The trick ends when the player has completed 3 repetitions of Vertical Punches after his feet are firmly planted. The yo-yo trajectories must be near horizontal at 180 degrees and fully vertical at 360 degrees. Once the player has started the 360-degree turn they can not stop the turning until the full revolution is completed. The player should attempt to stay in the trick box but will not be penalized if they do step out during or after the turn.

2A Tiebreakers

In the event of a tie, the tie will be broken using the following tricks

  1. Double Staircase: After performing the 3 full Vertical Punches of the first Staircase punch down through the Punching Bag position into Milk The Cow and continue into a second Staircase in the reverse direction of rotation ending with 3 full Vertical Punches after rotating 360 degrees and after feet are firmly planted. If two or more tied contestants miss Tiebreaker #1, the trick will be repeated. If the tied contestants miss on the second attempt Tiebreaker #2 will be used to break the tie.
  2. Cross-handed Staircase: Same as Staircase, except must start with a Cross-handed Milk the Cow and must keep hands crossed for the entire trick ending with 3 overhead Cross-handed Vertical Punches. If two or more tied contestants miss Tiebreaker #2, the trick will be repeated. If the tied contestants miss on the second attempt Tiebreaker #3 will be used to break the tie.
  3. If a tie remains, we will repeat tricks #7 through trick #9 increasing the reps by and additional five (5) until the freestyle finalists are determined. If the tied contestants miss on the second attempt the one(s) completing the most repetitions successfully will continue in the tiebreaker as necessary.

2002[]

1A Compulsory List[]

Special thanks to Yama@18 of YET! for videography and Black, Tommy and Brent for demonstrating original videos of these tricks.

  1. Pop n' Fresh / Boing-E / Mach 5 (New Combination): Start with a "Split Bottom" mount. Go directly into a "Mach 5" hold by performing two underpasses with your freehand index finger (no string shortening somersaults allowed). Now perform five (5) Pops. The fifth Pop will leave you in position to go directly into "Boing-E-Boing". Perform five reps of (5) Boing-E-Boings (back and forth counts as one rep). Now go directly back into a "Mach 5" hold by performing two more underpasses with your freehand index finger, then perform five (5) full "Mach 5" revolutions, unwind to a "Skin the Cat" hold and lower to a sleeper and then return yo-yo to hand (no binds allowed). To be performed exactly as seen in video.
  2. Eli Hops (six (6) reps, one more rep than in 2001): Start with Trapeze mount and perform six (6) Hops (or Pops). Hands must touch during each of the six Hops. Must end with a Ferris wheel dismount (no binds allowed). To be performed exactly as seen in video.
  3. Double Skin the Gerbil: Full momentum Trapeze mount into an inside somersault continuing into a Lindy Loop, then unwind the Lindy Loop with an outside reverse somersault into a reverse Lindy Loop. Unwind the reverse Lindy Loop and intentionally miss landing a Lindy Loop and land it on the flip over. Unwind the Lindy loop back to a Trapeze hold and go directly into a second full Skin the Gerbil ending with a Ferris wheel dismount (no binds allowed). To be performed exactly as seen in video.
  4. Hop in the Bucket (5 Hops, two more hops than in 2001): [See MPG Video]Start with a Drop in the Bucket mount and perform five Hops in the bucket. During each Hop the yo-yo must rise above the bucket by at least one yo-yo diameter. After the fifth Hop in the Bucket, toss the yo-yo onto the string furthest from the body. Then drop string off thumb of freehand and index finger of throwhand into a Trapeze hold and end with a Ferris wheel dismount (no binds allowed). To be performed exactly as seen in video.
  5. Buddha's Fusion: Start with a "One and a Half" mount and perform two reps of Buddha"s Revenge, then from the "One and a Half" mount hold, cross throwhand under freehand and Pop to Double or Nothing. From the Double or Nothing position perform the two string transfers of Cold Fusion, then toss yo-yo over freehand index finger so that the string segments land on (not just over) freehand index finger then toss the yo-yo back over so that the string segments land on throwhand index finger and perform one Pin Wheel, then unwind (two reverse Pin Wheels) and perform a Snag catch and end with a Ferris wheel dismount (no binds allowed). To be performed exactly as seen in video.
  6. White Buddha, Basic Version (New): Throw the beginning of "One and a Half" mount. After the yo-yo hits the top string, just let it bounce off and land immediately on the bottom string. Now go into a "One and a Half" mount hold with your freehand directly above your throwhand. Next, flip everything by moving your freehand down and your throwhand up - flipping the yo-yo as well - counter-clockwise. This is just like Buddha"s Revenge. Now spread the string with the thumb and index finger of your throwhand and flip the yo-yo out of the "bucket". Immediately flip the yo-yo back into the bucket. Now flip the yo-yo clockwise over your freehand and throwhand. Next flip the yo-yo back counter-clockwise over your freehand and throwhand, and flip the yo-yo over your freehand index finger onto the double string. The yo-yo should now be held in a "V" with your freehand crossed slightly over your throwhand. Now drop the string loop from your throwhand index finger into the yo-yo groove in front off all the strings. You will now be in what looks like a Trapeze hold but it is not. The yo-yo is being held in this hold by a "bind" caused by the dropped string loop. Now you must pause for at least one second (player counts out loud to judge One, Two) and then pulls string with throw hand releasing the "bind". The yo-yo will drop out of this "false" Trapeze hold and will be hanging over the outside of freehand index finger. Flip yo-yo back into a Trapeze hold and end trick with a Ferris wheel dismount (no binds allowed). To be performed exactly as seen in video.
  7. Kwijibo: Trapeze mount, then perform an upward Pop into a wrist-crossed "One and a Half" mount hold (with throwhand over freehand), then roll throwhand over and under freehand into a wrist-crossed "One and a Half" mount hold (with freehand over throwhand), then Pop to a Double or Nothing hold, then Pop to a Trapeze hold and end with a Ferris wheel dismount (no binds allowed). (Note that yo-yo must be popped upward on all three Hops, not to the side, and on the first Pop the throwhand must be clearly crossed over the freehand so that the yo-yo is caught in the middle of a "close to" horizontal wrist-crossed One and a Half" mount hold.) Note that all pops must go above the player"s head. To be performed exactly as seen in video.
  8. Slack Trapeze (New): [See MPG Video] Throw a Trapeze. Pop the yo-yo off the Trapeze, and pinch the string between the pointer and middle fingers on the freehand. With the throwhand, throw the string over the freehand arm, forming a "U", and allow the part of the "U" furthest from you to mount itself onto the yo-yo. Swing the yo-yo clockwise over the freehand and throwhand, and you will be back in Trapeze. End trick with a Ferris wheel dismount (no binds allowed). To be performed exactly as seen in video.
  9. Spirit Bomb (New) Text updated 6/7/02: Breakaway over freehand index finger (not over thumb) into a wrist-bucket mount, perform a double pass under with freehand index finger, Pop yo-yo up, bring throwhand under and catch yo-yo on outermost string segment, Pop yo-yo up, uncross arms, and catch yo-yo over freehand index finger back into Wrist-bucket Mount (Note that the yo-yo has to pass through the triangle formed over your throwhand and land on bottom string segment), perform two pass unders with freehand index finger onto back string segment and pull into Trapeze, end with a Ferris wheel dismount (no binds allowed). To be performed exactly as seen in video.
  10. Suicide (three 3 reps, one more rep than in 2001): Trapeze mount, three Suicide catches back into Trapeze hold, ending with a Ferris wheel dismount (no binds allowed). All Suicide throws must be from a Trapeze hold over the throwhand and must be caught on the index finger only of the freehand. To be performed exactly as seen in video.

[1]World 1A DIVISION Judging FAQ's[]

To help you understand what the judges will be looking for with the compulsory tricks for the A division, Bill DeBoisblanc, Head judge for the 2002 World Yo-Yo Contest has provided the following Q&A's for the trick list.

  1. Pop n' Fresh / Boing-E / Mach 5: Q: Is a Ferris wheel dismount the same as a Flyaway dismount that was required on last year's tricks. A: Yes. Q. Do I have to do 5 reps of Pop n Fresh before the Boing-E's? A.: No, only 5 pops which would be 2 _ reps of Pop n Fresh. Q: What if I do one extra pop, is that OK? A: No, you would have to do two extra pops, one extra rep, so you could go directly into Boing-EÕs as required in the trick description and as shown in the trick video. Q: Why can't I do any somersaults before going into the Mach 5 hold? A: Because the somersaults effectively shorten the string segments making the trick elements easier to perform. Also, adding extra elements is not allowed by the rules. Q: Can I do a looping dismount like last year or do I have to bring the yo-yo back to my hand from a sleeper. A. No, we have removed the looping element from the trick description since most string trick yo-yos don't loop well. Therefore, doing a loop would be adding an element to the trick, which is not allowed by the rules.
  2. Eli Hops: Q. Do the Eli Hops have to be straight up vertically from the string? A: No, but the yo-yo should be thrown upward and not horizontally. All three hops should be within 45 degrees, to either side, of a vertical line Q. Can I do extra Eli Hops? A. Yes, you will not be penalized for doing extra hops, however if you miss the string on an extra hop it will be a miss so be careful.
  3. Double Skin the Gerbil: Q: What if I miss the Lindy Loop on the flip over can I flip it over again? A: No. That would be a miss because the object is to intentionally miss the Lindy Loop and then make it on
  4. Hop in the Bucket: Q: Do all of the five hops in the bucket have to land on the same string? A: Yes. The yo-yo must land on the center string on each of the five hops. Otherwise it is not landing in the "BUCKET."
  5. Buddha's Fusion: Q: It seem like when I toss the yo-yo onto the throw hand to perform the "one" PinWheel, I have to do one and a half PinWheels. Is this OK? A: Yes. The trick description calls for "one" PinWheel but actually it is more accurately described as one and a half PinWheels.
  6. White Buddha, Basic Version: Q: Can I do a harder version of this trick that I prefer? A: You must do the trick exactly as described and as shown in the official video. Q: What if the yo-yo falls out of the "bind", before I can count to two? A: The attempt will be considered a miss. Note that since you can count to two, in no more than one second, it does not require a long pause but does require a pause before you release the yo-yo from the string bind.
  7. Kwijibo: Q: Does the yo-yo have to land on the string furthest from the body on the "Double or Nothing" catch? A: No. The yo-yo may land on any of the three segments of the "Double or Nothing" and may be popped up to the trapeze catch from its position on any of the three segments. However, you may not pop or hop the yo-yo to another string prior to the pop to the trapeze. Q; Do my hands have to be crossed before the yo-yo lands in the "wrist crossed double or nothing" hold? A: Yes. Before the yo-yo lands on the string into the "wrist crossed double or nothing" hold, the Throw Hand must be clearly crossed over the Free Hand. (For this to be clear to the judge, the Throw Hand should be at least 3 inches (7.5 cm.) past an imaginary vertical line passing through the wrist of your Free Hand before the yo-yo lands on the string.
  8. Slack Trapeze (New): Q: What if the yo-yo mounts the string on the wrong side of the yo-yo, and it is in a twist after I try to swing the yo-yo back to the Trapeze mount? A: Since your are not back in a trapeze hold but in a twist it will not be possible to perform a Ferris wheel dismount and the attempt will be a miss. Q. Can I swing the yo-yo back and forth to try to get the yo-yo to mount the slack string? A: No, the yo-yo must mount itself on the string as a result of the throw of the string over your freehand arm.
  9. Spirit Bomb: Q. I like to use my thumb on the breakaway and then use the freehand index finger as the yo-yo goes into the Wrist-Bucket Mount. Why can't I use this technique since thatÕs how most people do the trick? A: You can't use that version since we want everyone to do the same variation of this trick. Using your method you only have to perform one pass under before the first pop instead of two. Therefore, it is not acceptable since it is not consistent with either the trick description or as shown in the official video.
  10. Suicide: Q: If the string segments are twisted after the Suicide catch, may I untwist the trapeze loop before attempting the next suicide. A: Yes. The freehand index finger may be twisted to remove one or more twists subject to the following conditions. The Suicide must be caught on only the index finger of the freehand and the yo-yo must not be removed from the basic Trapeze hold. Q: What if, after I catch the loop on my freehand index finger, the loop also touches other fingers because I jabbed it in a bit too far. Is that OK? A: Yes, but you must first clearly put your index finger through the loop. You can't catch the loop on any other finger.

2A Compulsory List[]

Special thanks to Yama@18 of YET! for videography and Ryusei Saito, Koji Yokoyama, Hiraku Fujii for demonstrating these tricks.

  1. Sword and Shield (six (6) reps, one more rep than in 2001): This trick must start with an Around the World and end after at least six (6) Around the Worlds. The Loops must start during the first Around the World and at least one Loop must pass through the trajectory of each of the six (or more) Around the Worlds. If one or more additional Around the Worlds are thrown, at least one Loop must pass through the trajectory of each Around the World. No corkscrewing or loss of control of either yo-yo will be allowed. To be performed exactly as seen in video.
  2. Windshield Wipers (six (6) reps, one more rep than in 2001): Simultaneously, starting from either the right or left side, a Breakaway is thrown with one hand while a Reverse Breakaway is thrown with the other hand. When the yo-yos get to the other side they are simultaneously regenerated into another Breakaway (or Reverse Breakaway.) This cycle constitutes one rep. Continue to regenerate these simultaneous "Breakaways" ten more times to complete the six reps. Slight breaks in the simultaneous timing of the Breakaways will be acceptable. No corkscrewing or loss of control of either yo-yo will be allowed. To be performed exactly as seen in video.
  3. Two Hand Arm Wraps (New): Start with 3 or more reps of two hand Loops. Then transition one yo-yo into Around the Worlds and wrap around the looping arm on the second Around the World and unwrap between loops back into two hand Loops and perform at least 3 reps of two hand Loops. Then transition the other yo-yo into Around the Worlds and wrap around the looping arm on the second Around the World. Then unwrap between Loops again back into two hand Loops and perform at least 3 reps of two hand Loops before catching the yo-yos. Minor corkscrewing will be allowed on the transitions provided there is no significant loss of control of either yo-yo. To be performed exactly as seen in video.
  4. Spread Eagle Warp Drive (six (6) reps, one more rep than in 2001): Each hand must start with a side Loop regeneration into an Around the World followed by five (5) more side Loop regenerations into an Around the World. The Around the World trajectories must cross behind the back, across the vertical centerline of the player's back, on all six reps. The yo-yos must be caught after the sixth Around the World with each hand. If a contestant throws an additional Loop with either hand, before the catch, it will be considered a miss. No corkscrewing or loss of control of either yo-yo will be allowed. To be performed exactly as seen in video.
  5. Wrist-Crossed Fountain (New): Start with hands crossed and perform 3 or more Wrist-Crossed Hop the Fences with each hand (3 reps) below 45 degrees from the vertical, followed by a transition to 3 or more Wrist-Crossed Punching Bags with each hand (3 reps) between 45-135 degrees from the vertical, followed by a transition to 3 or more Wrist-Crossed Vertical Punches . Then punch back down to 3 or more Wrist-Crossed Punching Bags with each hand (3 reps) between 45-135 degrees from the vertical, then punch back down to 3 or more Wrist-Crossed Hop the Fences below 45 degrees from the vertical and catch the yo-yos while hands are still crossed. No corkscrewing or loss of control of either yo-yo will be allowed. To be performed exactly as seen in video.
  6. Elbow Wraps (New): Start with 3 or more reps of two hand Loops, with both hands regenerate into Around the Worlds, on the second Around the World with each hand wrap both elbows, and turn 180 degrees while transitioning up into 5 or more reps of Vertical Punches. Minor corkscrewing will be allowed on the transitions provided there is no significant loss of control of either yo-yo. To be performed exactly as seen in video.
  7. Inside/Outside Vertical Punches (twelve (12) reps, two more reps than in 2001 plus new details): You must start by throwing the yo-yos directly upward. As the yo-yos come down perform an Inside Vertical Punch with each hand. Note that you no longer have the option of beginning this trick with a Forward Pass/Reach for the Moon motion as was allowed in 2001. Therefore, after the initial vertical tosses, the first Vertical Punch with each hand must be an Inside Vertical Punch and the second Vertical Punch with each hand must be an Outside Vertical Punch. In other words, you must start alternating Vertical Punches immediately and perform at least 12 reps with each hand. Each rep consists of one Inside Vertical Punch and one Outside Vertical Punch with each hand. At no time, including during extra reps or during the ending, may you do two or more consecutive Inside or Outside Vertical Punches with the same hand. The count will start on the second hand performing the first Outside Punch. No corkscrewing or loss of control of the yo-yo(s) will be allowed. To be performed exactly as seen in video.
  8. Behind the Back Cattle Crossing (twenty (20) reps, ten more reps than in 2001 plus new details): The Yo-Yo trajectories must cross on the first throw of each hand and must stayed crossed for all 20 (or more) reps. The count starts on the first throw of the second yo-yo as it crosses the trajectory of the first yo-yo. The yo-yos must be caught behind the back while the trajectories are still crossing. No corkscrewing or loss of control of the yo-yo(s) will be allowed. To be performed exactly as seen in video.
  9. Double Staircase: This trick consists of two complete Staircases, one to the left and one to the right, performed in order of choice. [See MPG Video] Starts with 2-handed Milk the Cow in front or to one side and works it's way up to Vertical Punches while the player rotates 360 degrees into 3 or more reps of Vertical Punches after both feet are planted, then punch down into Milk the Cow and perform the same trick in the opposite direction ending with 3 or more reps of Vertical Punches. In other words, the player starts facing forward, and ends up facing forward after two complete revolutions, one in each direction. The trick ends when the player has completed 3 or more reps of Vertical Punches after both feet are planted. The player should attempt to stay in the trick box, but will not be penalized if they do step out during the trick. Minor corkscrewing will be allowed on the transitions provided there is no significant loss of control of either yo-yo. To be performed exactly as seen in video.
  10. Combined Inside/Outside Reach for the Moons (twelve (12) reps, two more reps than in 2001 plus new details): Starting with the first rep, the yo-yos must alternate from the inside of each throw hand on the upward vertical tosses to the outside of each throw hand on the downward trajectory. As the yo-yo descends it is thrown out and upward with an Outside Loop to complete the first rep. As the yo-yo returns a second inside upward toss is made as in a standard Reach for the Moon and again as the yo-yo descends it is thrown out and upward with an Outside Loop to complete the second rep. The count will start on the second hand performing the first Outside Loop. No corkscrewing or loss of control of the yo-yo(s) will be allowed. To be performed exactly as seen in video.

World 2A DIVISION Judging FAQ's[]

Q. What does "no corkscrewing mean" and how is this rule enforced?

A. Corkscrewing occurs during looping maneuvers when the yo-yo string does not line up with an imaginary line through the groove of yo-yo because the yo-yo is tipping over way too much. Since it is not immediately obvious when corkscrewing starts to occur, the judges will probably not call a trick a miss until they observe at least two or three obvious corkscrews.

Q. How tight will the "loss of control" rule be enforced?

A. The rule will be strictly enforced. However, "loss of control" means that the player is having a serious problem keeping one or both yo-yos in the right plane and has to resort to a maneuver, like throwing a yo-yo out to the side to regain control.

Sword and Shield:

Q. Why can't I start this trick by doing loops first and then start the Around the Worlds?

A. Because the trick description requires that you start with Around the World and throw a loop through each and every Around the World. The object is to have all contestants doing the same trick elements in the same order.

Q. How do you count the Around the Worlds?

A. The count is made as the yo-yo completes each full revolution as it passes by your feet

Q. After I have completed 6 or more reps can I catch either yo-yo first?

A. Yes, but if you throw any extra Around the Worlds you must perform at least one loop through the Around the World. Also, once you catch one yo-yo you must immediately catch the other yo-yo.

Windshield Wipers:

Q. How high do the breakaways have to go to be legal?

A. All of the breakaways must be at least 45 degrees from the vertical, preferably almost horizontal.

Q. What if one yo-yo gets a bit ahead of the other, is that OK?

A. Yes, since the rules allow "slight breaks" in the simultaneous Breakaways the yo-yo don't have to be tracking perfectly in sync.

Two Hand Arm Wraps:

Q. What if I do ten loops after the first Arm Wrap to get ready for the second Arm Wrap is that OK?

A. Yes, since 3 or more loops are allowed. However, even though slight corkscrewing is allowed, there can be no significant loss of control during the extra loops.

Q. Do I have to throw 2 complete Around the Worlds before the Arm Wrap?

A. Yes, the trick description requires that you perform each Arm Wrap on the second Around the World. Actually, the wrap occurs just as you are completing the second full Around the World. Instead of catching the yo-yo, you let it go under your looping arm and wrap around your forearm.

Spread Eagle Warp Drive:

Q. May I do a full Loop-the Loop and then start the regenerations into around the World? Also, may I throw loops in between the Around the Worlds?

A. No to both questions, the trick descriptions says that "Each hand must start with a side Loop regeneration into an Around the World." Therefore, you must start with a Forward Pass with each hand and as the yo-yos return towards your hands immediately regenerate the yo-yos into Around the Worlds. Continue to regenerate five more time into Around the Worlds without looping in between. In summary, you may NOT perform a loop before the first Around the World or in between the five regenerations of Around the Worlds.

Q. May I throw a loop with either or both hands after the last Around the World before I catch the yo-yos?

A. No, you must catch each yo-yo after the final Around the World with each hand and you can't throw any loops with either hand before the catch(s).

Q. How spread out do the Warp Drives have to be? What if the planes of each are only about 90 degrees apart?

A. That is OK since it is not specified that the planes of each Warp-Drive be a specified number of degrees apart. The important requirement is that the yo-yo trajectories cross "the vertical centerline of the player's back" on all 6 reps.

Q. If I lose track of the count or canÕt hear the judges count, can I do an extra rep of Spread Eagle Warp Drive?

A. Yes, even though the instructions for this trick clearly require you to catch the yo-yos after the sixth rep you will not be penalized as long as the extra rep is legal with the yo-yos crossing behind your back. So if the yo-yos don't cross on the extra rep it is a miss even if the first six reps were perfect.

Wrist-Crossed Fountain:

Q. Can one yo-yo be lower than the other while performing the Punching Bags and Vertical Punches?

A. Yes, since when your arms are crossed one is lower than the other so the punches with bottom hand naturally go a bit lower. The important requirement is that the trajectories of each yo-yo are doing legal punches

Elbow Wraps:

Q. When does the count start on the Vertical Punches?

A. After you have completed the 180-degree half turn, the count will start on the second yo-yo performing a Vertical Punch.

Inside/Outside Vertical Punches:

Q. How do you start this trick?

A. You start with a punch perform straight above your head and not with an upward forward pass type throw.

Q. After I have completed the 12 reps successfully, can I do a couple inside Vertical Punches before catching the yo-yos.

A: No, last year it was allowed but this year it would be considered a miss.

Q. Can I catch one yo-yo and do an extra rep with one hand.

A. No, once you catch one yo-yo, you must catch the other on the same rep.

Behind the Back Cattle Crossing:

Q. What if on the first rep the yo-yos are very close to crossing but they do not quite cross behind my back.

A. It will be judged a miss. All reps, starting with the first throw with each yo-yo, must clearly cross behind your back. The judges will be concentrating on where the yo-yos are as they get to the end of the string. If they see a gap between the yo-yos it will be a miss.

Q. Can I do extra reps before the catches?

A. Yes, but the yo-yos must cross on the extra rep (or reps) and both yo-yos must be caught behind your back after the same rep.

Double Staircase:

Q. Do I have to do three or more Milk the Cows before I start turning?

A. No, one complete rep of Milk the Cow is enough.

Q. When does the count start on the Vertical Punches after each Staircase?

A. After you have rotated the full 360 degrees. Be very careful since you may have to do more than 3 reps if any of the Vertical Punches where thrown before you had completed the full turn. Listen for the judge to count to three.

Combined Inside/Outside Reach for the Moon:

Q. Can I start this trick with regular inside Reach for the Moons before starting them going inside and outside?

A. No, that was allowed last year but this year the trick has been made a bit harder by requiring that you start with an Inside Reach for the Moon with each hand and immediately start alternating inside outside.

2003[]

The X division which used to choose finals via VHS tape auditions, in this year now became split into 3A, 4A, and 5A meant each style would get a compulsory list from here. Top 10 or 5 from each division was said to be put in final round.

1A Compulsory Trickset:[]

  1. Three Seven: Start with a "Split Bottom" mount. Go directly into a "Mach 5" hold by performing two underpasses with your freehand index finger (no string shortening somersaults allowed). Now perform seven (7) Pops. The seventh Pop will leave you in position to go directly into "Boing-E-Boing". Perform seven (7) reps of Boing-E-Boings (back and forth counts as one rep). Now go directly back into a "Mach 5" hold by performing two more underpasses with your freehand index finger, then perform seven (7) full "Mach 5" revolutions, unwind to a "Skin the Cat" hold and lower to a sleeper and then return yo-yo to hand (no binds allowed). To be performed exactly as seen in video.
  2. White Buddha: Throw the beginning of one-and-a-half mount. After the yo-yo hits the top string, just let it bounce off immediately and land on the bottom string. Now go into a one-and-a-half mount hold with your Freehand directly above your Throwhand. Next, flip everything by moving your Freehand down and your Throwhand up flipping the yo-yo as well counter-clockwise. This is just like Buddha's Revenge. Now spread the string with the thumb and index finger of your Throwhand and flip the yo-yo out of the bucket. Immediately flip the yo-yo back into the bucket. Now flip the yo-yo clockwise over your Freehand and Throwhand. Once again flip the yoyo out of the bucket but this time flip it out in front of the string furthest from you. Let the yo-yo swing around your Freehand index finger counter-clockwise over your Throwhand index finger onto the same string. Drop the outermost string segment off your Freehand index finger and then rotate the yo-yo counter-clockwise around your Throwhand index finger into a Trapeze and his brother hold (note that your must simultaneously unwind a twist during the rotation with your Freehand index finger.) Flip the yo-yo clockwise over Throwhand index finger and catch the yo-yo in a one and a half mount. The yo-yo is being held in this hold by a "bind" caused by the dropped string loop...pause and show the hold. Then pull string with Throwhand releasing the bind. The yo-yo will drop out of this false trapeze hold and will be hanging over the outside of Freehand index finger. Flip yo-yo back into a trapeze hold and end trick with a Ferris wheel dismount.
  3. Shock Wave: (3 reps): Trapeze mount. Next press your throw-hand thumb and index finger together forming a "V" over the string, and wrap the string under your thumb and over the outside of your index finger by rolling your wrist towards your body. Now perform a "Magic Drop" by opening the "V' as you let the yo-yo roll down the string under and over your throw-hand index finger onto the string segment nearest your body. You will now be holding the yo-yo in a modified trapeze mount with the string going over your thumb and throw-hand and with your index fingers spreading the string segments of the trapeze. Now, while making sure not to drop the string off your throw-hand index finger, let the yo-yo roll back down the string under and over your freehand index finger landing on the string nearest your body. Now let the string drop off your throw-hand index finger and also let the outer segment drop off your freehand index finger. You should now be back in a trapeze hold, repeat twice more. End the trick with a Ferris wheel (no binds allowed).
  4. Suicide Catch (3 reps): Trapeze mount, three Suicide catches back into Trapeze hold, ending with a Ferris wheel dismount (no binds allowed). All Suicide throws must be from a Trapeze hold over the throwhand and must be caught on the index finger only of the freehand. To be performed exactly as seen in video.
  5. Kwijibo: (2 full reps) Trapeze mount, then perform an upward Pop into a wrist-crossed "One and a Half" mount hold (with throwhand over freehand), then roll throwhand over and under freehand into a wrist-crossed "One and a Half" mount hold (with freehand over throwhand), then Pop to a Double or Nothing hold, then Pop to a Trapeze hold. From the Trapeze hold complete a second rep and end with a Ferris wheel dismount (no binds allowed). (Note that yo-yo must be popped upward on all three Hops, not to the side, and on the first Pop the throwhand must be clearly crossed over the freehand so that the yo-yo is caught in the middle of a "close to" horizontal wrist-crossed One and a Half" mount hold.) Note that all pops must go above the player's head. To be performed exactly as seen in video.
  6. Eli Hop: (7 reps): Start with Trapeze mount and perform seven (7) Hops (or Pops). Hands must touch during each of the seven Hops. Must end with a Ferris wheel dismount (no binds allowed). To be performed exactly as seen in video.
  7. Slack Trapeze (2 reps): Throw a Trapeze. Pop the yo-yo off the Trapeze, and pinch the string between the fingers of your freehand. With the throwhand, throw the string over the freehand arm, forming a "U", and allow the part of the "U" furthest from you to mount itself onto the yo-yo. Swing the yo-yo clockwise over the freehand and throwhand, and you will be back in Trapeze. From the Trapeze hold complete a second rep and end trick with a Ferris wheel dismount (no binds allowed). To be performed exactly as seen in video.
  8. Spirit Bomb with Slack Bomb Mount: Spirit Bomb With Slack Bomb Mount: Throw a Trapeze, then throw a slack loop under and over your Freehand catching the loop over your Throwhand. Now swing the yo-yo over your Freehand index finger landing the yo-yo into a wrist-bucket mount. Pull your Freehand out of the hold so the yo-yo is hanging in the mount over your Throwhand. Now perform a double pass under with freehand index finger, Pop yo-yo up, bring throwhand under and catch yo-yo on outermost string segment, Pop yo-yo up, uncross arms, and catch yo-yo over freehand index finger back into Wrist-bucket Mount (Note that the yo-yo has to pass through the triangle formed over your throwhand and land on bottom string segment), perform two pass unders with freehand index finger onto back string segment and pull into Trapeze, end with a Ferris wheel dismount (no binds allowed). To be performed exactly as seen in video.
  9. Black Hop: Start with Triple or Nothing mount over both index fingers (note that you can not throw the Triple or Nothing over your thumbs or other fingers to spread the strings apart), hop down to Trapeze in 4 hops then back to a hold similar (but not quite) to a Triple or Nothing in 4 hops (more like undercuts).  After all 8 hops pull your Throwhand index finger out of the hold and rotate the Yo-Yo 2 revolutions into a Trapeze hold, end with a Ferris wheel dismount (no binds allowed). To be performed exactly as seen in video.
  10. Iron Whip: (Combined trick and tiebreaker: Successfully complete 3 reps for 5 points, continue and complete as many reps as you can on one throw for use as first tiebreaker. Each contestant will try this trick twice regardless of how many reps they complete on the first try for use as the second tiebreaker. If first attempt is missed, completion 3 or more reps on the second try gets 3 pts.

2A Compulsory Trickset:[]

  1. Orbit the Moons (5 reps): Start with a forward pass outward toss with each hand and immediately punch each yo-yo into a half revolution of retro-Around the World up into a Reach for the Moon. At the end of the outward toss of the Reach for the Moon punch each yo-yo into another half revolution of retro-Around the World back up into a second Reach for the Moon. Complete 5 reps and catch the yo-yos on the outward toss of the fifth Reach for the Moon. Each hand can perform the reps simultaneously or Alternating.
  2. Two Hand Arm Wraps: (One more "loop wrap" with each hand than last year) Start with three or more reps of two hand loops. Transition one yo-yo into Around the World and wrap around the looping arm on the second World and perform two or more "loop wraps" with the wrap hand going under and over the loops, then transition back into two hand loops and perform three or more reps. Now transition the other yo-yo into Worlds and wrap around the looping arm on the second World and perform two or more "loop wraps" and transition back into two hand loops and perform three or more reps before catching the yo-yos.
  3. Wrist-Crossed Fountain: (5-5-5-5-5, 2 more reps than last year) Start with hands crossed and perform five or more wrist-crossed Hop the Fences with each hand below 45 degrees from the vertical, followed by a transition to five or more wrist-crossed Punching Bags with each hand between 45-135 degrees from the vertical, followed by a transition to five or more wrist-crossed Vertical Punches. Then punch back down to five or more wrist-crossed Punching Bags with each hand between 45-135 degrees from the vertical, then punch back down to five or more wrist-crossed Hop the Fences below 45 degrees from the vertical and catch the yo-yos while hands are still crossed.
  4. Elbow Wraps: (This year the Vertical Punches are performed cross-handed) Start with three or more reps of two hand loops, with both hands regenerate into Around the Worlds, on the second world with each hand wrap both elbows, and turn 180 degrees while transitioning immediately up into five or more reps of cross-handed Vertical Punches.
  5. Inside/Outside Vertical Punches (15 reps): (15 reps, 3 more than last year) - You must start by throwing the yo-yos directly upward. As the yo-yos come down perform an Inside Vertical Punch with each hand. Note that you do not have the option of beginning this trick with a Forward Pass/Reach for the Moon motion. Therefore, after the initial vertical tosses, the first Vertical Punch with each hand must be an Inside Vertical Punch and the second Vertical Punch with each hand must be an Outside Vertical Punch. In other words, you must start alternating Vertical Punches immediately and perform at least fifteen reps with each hand. All punches must be no more than 30 degrees from vertical.
  6. Double Staircase: This trick consists of two complete Staircases, one to the left and one to the right, performed in order of choice. Trick starts with Milk the Cow in front or to one side and works it's way up to Vertical Punches while the player rotates 360 degrees into three or more reps of Vertical Punches after both feet are planted, then punch down into Milk the Cow and perform the same trick in the opposite direction ending with three or more reps of Vertical Punches. In other words, the player starts facing forward, and ends up facing forward after two complete revolutions, one in each direction. After both feet are planted, perform three or more reps of Vertical Punches and catch both yo-yos.
  7. Combined Inside/Outside Reach for the Moons (15 reps): (15 reps, 3 more than last year) Starting with the first rep, the yo-yos must alternate from the inside of each throw hand on the upward vertical tosses to the outside of each throw hand on the downward trajectory.
  8. Behind the Back Cattle Crossing (20 reps): (Combined tiebreaker, 20 reps) - The Yo-Yo trajectories must cross on the first throw of each hand and must stayed crossed for all twenty or more reps. The count starts on the first throw of the second yo-yo as it crosses the trajectory of the first yo-yo. Complete 20 or more reps on first try for 5 points, continue until you miss for use as first tiebreaker. Complete 20 or more reps on second try for 3 points, continue until you miss for use as second tiebreaker. Each contestant will try this trick two times.
  9. Cow Wrap Combo: Start with Hop the Fence with one hand, and then throw a retro Around the World with the other hand.  As you complete the retro Around the World let it wrap over the arm doing Hop the Fence. Complete at least 3 cow wraps around the Hop the Fences. Your "wrap string" is now in front of the Hop the Fence arm (exactly like when you started the wraps) Pull the yo-yo over the Hop the Fence arm and transition into loops under the Hop the Fence arm. Complete 3 or more reps of cross-arm loops and Hop The Fence and catch the yoyos.
  10. Kurukuru Pinwheel Wrap: Start with retro Around The Worlds with each hand thrown simultaneously to one side of your body. Let the yo-yo in one hand wrap over the other arm as it completes the first retro World and let it spin (sleep) while it is hanging there. Let the other yo-yo string wrap around your hand while it performs 3 or 4 retro Worlds. When you think the string is the right length on that hand grab the other string that is hanging over your other arm and start pin wheeling both yoyos. After 3 or more pinwheels with both yoyos throw retro Worlds to one side with both hands and transition up into Vertical Punches. Perform 5 or more Vertical Punches and catch the yo-yos.

3A Compulsory Trickset:[]

To help make these trick descriptions as clear as possible, we are numbering the yo-yos. The yo-yo thrown first it becomes yo-yo #1 in the description. If both yo-yos are thrown simultaneously, the first yo-yo to do a distinct trick element is designated yo-yo #1.

If after all the required trick elements are completed, the two strings are tangled or twisted, you may fix the tangle while the yo-yo are still sleeping, and then catch the yo-yos.

  1. Assisted Brain Twister (3 rep) Throw a sleeper with yo-yo #1, shorten the string to desired length by wrapping the string around Throwhand #1 and pinch string between thumb and index finger and hold yo-yo. Throw a sleeper with yo-yo #2 and perform a bottom mount (or a front mount) around yo-yo #1. Now perform 3 or more somersaults with both yo-yos rotating around the index finger of Throwhand #1. Next dismount yo-yo #2 off of yo-yo #1 with a reverse bottom mount back into a sleeper. Drop yo-yo #1 off Throwhand #1 back into a sleeper and catch both yo-yos.
  2. Velvet Roll (3 rep) Throw sleepers with yo-yos #1 and #2. Perform a front mount with yo-yo #1 over Throwhand #2 index finger and a front mount with yo-yo #2 over Throwhand #1 index finger. Now simultaneously perform 3 or more reverse somersaults (velvet rolls) with both yo-yos. Now reverse the rotation and dismount both yo-yos from the front mounts back into sleepers and catch both yo-yos.
  3. 2-hand Dizzy Baby (3 pinwheel) Throw sleepers with yo-yos #1 and #2. Shorten the string of yo-yo #1 to desired length by wrapping the string around Throwhand #1. Now form a cradle with Throwhand #2 around Throwhand #1 and pinch both yo-yos strings together with Throwhand #2 and perform 3 or more pinwheels with both yo-yos simultaneously through the cradle. Drop both yo-yos out of the cradle back into sleepers and catch both yo-yos.
  4. Boomerang (Trapeze, 3 rep, Trapeze) Throw yo-yo #1 into a sideways sleeper with a breakaway type toss. Now throw a Trapeze with yo-yo #2 over the thumb of Throwhand #1. Toss yo-yo #2 out of the Trapeze and over the top of Throwhand #1 and hit the string of yo-yo #1. As yo-yo #2 bounces off the string of yo-yo #1 that will be the first rep of boomerang. Perform 3 or more reps of boomerang with yo-yo #2 by bouncing it off of the string of yo-yo #1. Then remount yo-yo #2 back into the trapeze over the thumb of Throwhand #1. Dismount yo-yo #2 out of the Trapeze down to a sleeper and catch both yo-yos.
  5. Gun Slinger (3 rep, 3 reverse) Throw sleepers with yo-yos #1 and #2. Do a bottom mount (or a split bottom mount) with yo-yo #1, over index finger of Throwhand #2, and place the loop segment over the index finger of Throwhand #1, now do a bottom mount (or a split bottom mount) with yo-yo #2, over index finger of Throwhand #1, and place the loop segment over the index finger of Throwhand #2. Now swing both yo-yos toward your body and rotate them over your index fingers. Perform 3 or more reps of these "mini" Around The Worlds with each yo-yo simultaneously. Then do 3 or more reverse "mini" Around The Worlds with each yo-yo and drop both yo-yos to sleepers and catch both yo-yos. This trick is also called "six-shoot" when done with one hand.
  6. Blue Line Roll (3 rep) Throw sleepers with yo-yos #1 and #2. Cross Throwhand #1 over Throwhand #2 and perform a split bottom mount with yo-yo#1 over the top of Throwhand #2. (Note that you may also start the trick by throwing cross-handed sleepers as shown at the following Glasslab link) Now pull the string of yo-yo#1 off of Throwhand #2 so the split bottom mount is now being held on the string of yo-yo#2. (If you wish, you may grab all three string segments of the split bottom mount with Throwhand #1 and squeeze them into the groove of yo-yo#1. This will stabilize yo-yo#1 and prevent it from gyro flopping while the next mount is performed.) Now with yo-yo #2 perform a split bottom mount using the string of yo-yo #1 and the index finger of Throwhand #2. Now start 3 rolls with Throwhand #2 going up and Throwhand #1 going down. After 3 or more reps reverse the rotation of the rolls and dismount the yo-yos of the strings and down into sleepers and catch the yo-yos.
  7. 2-hand Plastic Whip (at the same time) Simultaneously throw yo-yos #1 and 2 into sideways sleepers with breakaway type tosses. Now, perform simultaneous lacerations with each hand catching each yo-yo in a one-hand trapeze hold over your thumb or index finger. Simultaneously drop the strings off the fingers (or thumbs) back into sleepers and catch the yo-yos.
  8. Kink Fu Throw yo-yo #1 into a sideways sleeper. Now throw a breakaway with yo-yo #2 behind (or in front) and past the string of yo-yo #1. Catch the string of yo-yo #2 with Throwhand #1 as it goes past the string of yo-yo #1 and let yo-yo #2 swing back in front of the string of yo-yo #1. Then catch yo-yo #2 with Throwhand #2. The strings of the yo-yos will now be crossed. Now perform a sideways split bottom type mount with yo-yo #1 over the index finger of Throwhand #1. Next perform a Trapeze type mount (In *1, if it is a Trapeze type mount, you perform a sideways split bottom type mount) with yo-yo #2 over the index finger of Throwhand #2. Note that you can do the Trapeze mount first and then the sideways split bottom mount if you wish.
  9. Buckets O Kink Throw yo-yo #1 into a sideways sleeper. Now throw a breakaway with yo-yo #2. And cross yo-yo #2 with string of yo-yo #1 from behind (or in front). Then pinch (grab) string of yo-yo #2 with throwhand #2. When the yo-yo #2 swings back catch string with Throwhand # 2 palm up, across Throwhand #2 and then pinch the string. Use the following Glasslab link to follow the rest of the trick description. Pull the blue string out (the red string will already be wrapped around it). You want to pull it out about 4 inches short of the half-way mark. Pick up the string of yo-yo #1 with Throwhand #1, palm up. At this time, the string running over palm should be between thumb and index finger. Put thumb under the string between the crossing point of strings #1 and #2, and the middle finger, and pull and spread. Do simultaneous Bucket Mounts onto the inner string segments. To get out, flip the yo-yos out, remove thumbs, untwist the strings and catch the yo-yos. Now perform a side ways roll and cross the arm of Throwhand #2 over the arm of Throwhand #1 reverse the roll back to the original hold. Now perform another side ways roll and cross the arm of Throwhand #1 over the arm of Throwhand #2 reverse the roll back to the original hold. Note that you may reverse the order or the rolls if you so desire. . Dismount yo-yo #2 from the Trapeze without dropping any string segments and drop (or dismount), yo-yo #1 from its hold to a sleeper. Now swing and drop yo-yo #2 in front of the string of yo-yo #1 so that it will untwist the yo-yos strings and catch the yo-yos.
  10. 2-hand Trapeze (Continuous this if need a tiebreaker) Simultaneously throw breakaways with both hands and land each yo-yo in a trapeze mount. Dismount the yo-yos up and over the index fingers back into sleepers and catch the yo-yos.

4A Compulsory Trickset:[]

  1. Toss and Catch (5 rep; above head) Throw a Forward Pass Mount. The yo-yo will be in an Open Hold with each hand holding one end of the string. Toss yo-yo off the string, above your head, and catch the yo-yo back in an Open Hold. (Alternatively, you may grab both ends of the string with one hand and spread the ring with your Freehand index finger forming a Ring Hold. From this hold you may "change lanes" during the tosses, if you wish, and catch the yo-yo on either the top or bottom string segment.) Toss and catch for total of 5 or more reps. Wind string and catch yo-yo.
  2. String Release (3 rep) Throw Forward Pass Mount. The yo-yo will be in an Open Hold with each hand holding one end of the string. Swing yo-yo so it starts to rotate around one hand (the Throwhand), release the other end of the string, like a Suicide, and grab string with your Freehand as it completes the rotation to complete the first rep. Perform a total of 3 or more reps. Wind string and catch yo-yo.
  3. Whip Catch (2 rep; over whip) Throw Forward Pass Mount. The yo-yo will be in an Open Hold with each hand holding one end of the string. Grab both ends of the string with one hand and form a ring. Spread the ring with your Freehand index finger and toss the yo-yo out of the Ring Hold and catch it back in the hold with an "Over Whip" just like you would perform an Iron Whip catch. No "Under Whip" catches will be allowed. Repeat once more. Wind string and catch yo-yo. You may catch the yo-yo on either side of the ring (i.e. lane changes allowed.)
  4. Back Burner (2 rep) Throw Forward Pass Mount. The yo-yo will be in an Open Hold with each hand holding one end of the string. Now hold string in either an Open Hold or a Ring Hold. Then swing the yo-yo backwards under your Throwhand arm and toss the yo-yo up and over your arm, off the string, and catch yo-yo back on the string in an Open Hold. Repeat once more. Wind string and catch yo-yo.
  5. Behind the Back Catch (Any way is OK) Throw Forward Pass Mount. The yo-yo will be in an Open Hold with each hand holding one end of the string. Toss yo-yo up off the string and catch yo-yo in a behind the back Open Hold. You can go from the front hold to back hold anyway you want and use any method to catch the yo-yo. Wind string and catch yo-yo.
  6. Sen Poppin (3 rep) Throw Forward Pass Mount. The yo-yo will be in an Open Hold with each hand holding one end of the string. Grab both ends of the string with one hand and form a ring. Spread the ring with your Freehand index finger forming a Ring Hold. With a vertical Boingy-Boingy type motion toss the yo-yo from the bottom segment of the Ring Hold to the top segment. Switch hands back and forth as in a Pop n’ Fresh with your Freehand going over your Throwhand just as the yo-yo hits the top string segment. Each rep consist of one pop with hands uncrossed followed by a pop with hands crossed. Complete 6 pops for a total of 3 reps. Wind string and catch yo-yo. String hit misses or extra string hits without switching hands will be considered as a miss.
  7. Volcano (5 rep; touch hands) [description not made]
  8. Gyroscopic Flop (Hiro ver.) [description not made]
  9. Rising Boingy Boingy (3HBB to 3VBB) [description not made]
  10. OS Regeneration (FPM to BTM to FPM; 1 rep) [description not made]

Tiebreaker

OS Regeneration (FPR to BTM to FPM; continuously)

5A Compulsory Trickset:[]

  1. 360 360 720 Throw a trapeze, perform a somersault under your Freehand and release the counterweight allowing the counterweight to travel in one (1) complete circle around the Freehand and catch the counterweight. Throw another somersault under your Freehand releasing the counterweight again allowing the counterweight to travel in one (1) complete a circle around your Freehand, then throw two (2) somersaults under your Freehand releasing the counterweight. Catch the counterweight after it has traveled around your Freehand two (2) times. You should now be in a trapeze. End trick with any dismount.
  2. Aerial (3 rep; from Bottom Mount) Throw a sleeper into a bottom mount, dismount the yo-yo and let go of the counterweight allowing the momentum of the yo-yo to cause one full (1) rotation of string in the air. Catch the string or counterweight with your Throwhand at or near the end of the rotation to complete the first rep. On the same sleeper complete two (2) more reps and catch the yo-yo.
  3. Nunchuck Combo (Steve ver.) Throw a sleeper over your Freehand index finger and perform one Pinwheel continuing directly into a -split bottom mount. Drop the string from your Freehand, perform a somersault and release the counterweight allowing the string to unmount from the yo-yo and rotate under and over your Throwhand shoulder. Catch the counterweight with your Freehand in "shoulder hold" Pull the yo-yo over your shoulder allowing it to travel around your shoulder a second time, release the counterweight as the yo-yo travels around, grab the string (not the counterweight) and swing the counterweight around your shoulder back into a second "shoulder hold." Grab the counterweight with your Freehand and pull the yo-yo over one final time, transfer the counterweight to your original Throwhand and catch the yo-yo.
  4. Kung Fu Aerial (exactly same as Duncan Trick book) Throw a sleeper into a bottom mount, unwind to release the yo-yo and throw the counterweight allowing one(1) full rotation in the air, catch the yo-yo with the string draped over your shoulder (yo-yo in front, counterweight in back), grab the counterweight with your Freehand under your throw arm, toss the yo-yo back over your shoulder as you pull the counterweight free, transfer the yo-yo to your original Throwhand and catch the yo-yo.
  5. Electronic Fan (3 rep; from Trapeze; any dismount is OK) Throw a trapeze, perform a somersault under your Freehand and release the counterweight allowing it to make one (1) full rotation, catch the string (not the counterweight) after the somersault, reverse the direction of the counterweight's swing, perform three (3) reverse somersaults over your Freehand while swinging the counterweight, in the same direction, ahead of the yo-yo. End trick with any dismount.
  6. Beesting (1 rep; from Trapeze) Throw a trapeze, release the counterweight, swinging it under your Freehand allowing it to unmount the yo-yo, as the string comes around the other side throw the yo-yo over your Freehand in the opposite direction onto the string creating a reverse (backspin) mount, catch the counterweight with your Throwhand, allowing yo-yo to continue back into a trapeze mount. End trick with any dismount.
  7. One-hand Under Mount Throw a sleeper, swing the yo-yo forward and slide your Throwhand away from the counterweight and to the center of the string, allow the counterweight to swing under the yo-yo and mount it on the string as it travels around, catch the counterweight with Throwhand. End trick with any dismount.
  8. Wind Mill (3 rep) Throw a breakaway, intersect the string with your Freehand index finger as in trapeze, as the yo-yo travels around release the counterweight and allow it to trail the path of the yo-yo. Do not allow the yo-yo to mount onto the string. As the counterweight comes around, catch it with your original Throwhand to complete one rep. From the counterweight release complete two more reps. At the end of the third rep allow yo-yo to go into a trapeze mount. End trick with any dismount.
  9. Shoulder Pop (from Bottom Mount) Shoulder Pop: Throw a split bottom mount, drop the string from your Freehand, throw a somersault and release the counterweight, allowing the string to unmount from the yo-yo as the counterweight swings around. Allow the counterweight to strike near your shoulder causing it to change its rotation direction. As it comes around in the opposite direction allow the string to remount on the yo-yo and catch the counterweight. End trick with any one-hand dismount.
  10. Eli Hop Chop (4 rep; Terry ver.) Throw a trapeze, (opening) pop the yo-yo up, release the counterweight, grab the string with your Freehand and perform an undercut (chop) with your original Throwhand and mount the yo-yo in a "switch trapeze", pop the yo-yo up, release the string from your original Freehand, grab the string with your original Throwhand and perform an undercut (chop) with your original Freehand landing the yo-yo in a regular trapeze. Repeat from (opening) and perform two more chops into a second "switch trapeze" and a final regular trapeze for a total of four (4) chops. End trick with any dismount.

Tie Breaker: Shoulder Pop from Bottom Mount: continuously until extinction of yo-yo. Most reps wins.

2004[]

Bind returns were fully allowed where applicable this year.

Now go directly back into a "Mach 5" hold by performing two more underpasses with your freehand index finger, then perform seven (7) full "Mach 5" revolutions, unwind to a "Skin the Cat" hold and lower to a sleeper. Return yo-yo to your hand using the method of your choice.
  2. KAMIKAZE: Throw a "Houdini Drop" double or nothing hold using the thumb and index finger of your Freehand. Pop yo-yo upwards towards the top string segment and let the string segment drop off of your thumb simultaneously. The string should hit the underside of the top string and drop into a Side-style Mach 5 hold. Roll the yo-yo over your Throwhand index finger. Now with your Freehand index finger hook and pull the front string segment towards your body while letting the inside segment fall of your Freehand index finger. Now pop the yo-yo in front of the strings and land it on top of all the strings. At this point, or during the previous hop, you can untwist the string segment held on your Freehand index finger. Roll the yo-yo over your freehand index finger and you will be in a Trapeze hold. Next perform a Magic Drop as in Shock Wave. Now pop the yo-yo upward and hit the bottom of top string and let the yo-yo roll over your Throwhand index finger. Next reverse the direction of the roll and miss all strings. Let the yo-yo continue a second roll and land of the top string (furthest from your body). Reverse the direction of the roll again missing all strings. Let the yo-yo continue to roll and hit the bottom of the top string as it goes over your Throwhand index finger. Reverse the direction of the roll one last time landing the yo-yo on the bottom string. Let the outermost segment fall off your Freehand so you are back in a Trapeze hold. Return the yo-yo to your hand by the method of your choice.
  3. SHOCK WAVE (5 REPS): Trapeze mount. You should now be back in a trapeze hold, perform 4 more reps. Return yo-yo to your hand using the method of your choice.
  4. SUICIDE CATCH (5 REPS): Trapeze mount, five Suicide catches back into Trapeze hold. Return yo-yo to your hand using the method of your choice. All Suicide throws must be from a Trapeze hold over the throwhand and must be caught on the index finger only of the freehand.
  5. THROWHAND GRIND: Trapeze mount, reverse pinwheel off trapeze to a grind on top of the Throwhand, slide back onto a Trapeze from the grind. Perform 1 somersault letting the momentum of the somersault toss the yo-yo onto the top of the Throwhand for a second grind, slide yo-yo off the top of the Throwhand back into a Trapeze hold. Return yo-yo to your hand using the method of your choice.
  6. ALTERNATING ELI HOP (4 HOPS): Start with Trapeze mount and perform a one standard Eli Hop catching the yo-yo in front of your wrist, than perform a second Eli Hop catching the yo-yo behind your wrist, return the yo-yo to in front of your wrist and perform another hop in front of your wrist and another hop behind your wrist. Hands must touch during each of the 4 hops. Return yo-yo to your hand using the method of your choice.
  7. SLACK TRAPEZE (3 REPS): Throw a Trapeze. From the Trapeze hold complete 2 more reps. Return yo-yo to your hand using the method of your choice.
  8. SPIRIT BOMB WITH "CHEESE WHIP" MOUNT: Throw a Trapeze, and then perform a "Cheese Whip" by throwing a slack loop under and over your Freehand, catching the loop over your Throwhand. Now swing the yo-yo over your Freehand index finger and on to the string segment that is centered under your catching hand, landing the yo-yo into a wrist-bucket mount. Pull your Freehand out of the hold so the yo-yo is hanging in the mount over your Throwhand. Now perform a double pass-under with Freehand index finger, Pop yo-yo up, bring Throwhand under and catch yo-yo on outermost string segment, Pop yo-yo up, uncross arms, and catch yo-yo over Freehand index finger back into Wrist-bucket Mount (Note that the yo-yo has to pass through the triangle formed over your Throwhand and land on bottom string segment), perform two pass-unders with Freehand index finger onto back string segment and pull into Trapeze hold.ت Return yo-yo to your hand using the method of your choice..
After all 8 hops pull your Throwhand index finger out of the hold and rotate the Yo-Yo 2 revolutions into a Trapeze hold. Return yo-yo to your hand using the method of your choice.
  10. IRON WHIP (3 REP MINIMUM...COMBINED TIEBREAKER): Successfully complete 3 reps for 5 points, continue and complete as many reps as you can on one throw for use as first tiebreaker. Each contestant will try this trick twice regardless of how many reps they complete on the first try for use as the second tiebreaker. If first attempt is missed, completion of 3 or more reps on the second try gets 3 points. Complete as many reps as you can on this throw for use as second tiebreaker.

2A Compulsory Trickset:[]

  1. ORBIT THE MOONS (5 REPS): Orbit the Moons (5 reps) Start with a forward pass outward toss with each hand and immediately punch each yo-yo into a half revolution of retro-Around the World up into a Reach for the Moon. At the end of the outward toss of the Reach for the Moon punch each yo-yo into another half revolution of retro-Around the World back up into a second Reach for the Moon. Complete 5 reps and catch the yo-yos after the outward toss of the fifth Reach for the Moon. The reps may be performed either simultaneously or alternately.
  2. TWO HAND ARM WRAPS: Start with 5 or more reps of two hand loops. Transition one yo-yo into Around the World and wrap around the looping arm after the second World and perform two or more "loop wraps" with the wrap hand going under and over the loops, then transition back into two hand loops and perform 5 or more reps. Now transition the other yo-yo into Worlds and wrap around the looping arm after the second World and perform two or more "loop wraps" and transition back into two hand loops and perform 5 or more reps before catching the yo-yos.
  3. WRIST-CROSSED FOUNTAIN (5-5-5-5-5): Start with hands crossed and perform 5 or more wrist-crossed Hop the Fences with each hand below 45 degrees from the vertical, followed by a transition to 5 or more wrist-crossed Punching Bags with each hand between 45-135 degrees from the vertical, followed by a transition to 5 or more wrist-crossed Vertical Punches. Then punch back down to 5 or more wrist-crossed Punching Bags with each hand between 45-135 degrees from the vertical, then punch back down to 5 or more wrist-crossed Hop the Fences below 45 degrees from the vertical and catch the yo-yos while hands are still crossed.
  4. ELBOW WRAPS: Start with 5 or more reps of two hand loops, with both hands regenerate into Around the Worlds, on the second world with each hand wrap both elbows, and turn 180 degrees while transitioning immediately up into 5 or more reps of cross-handed Vertical Punches.
  5. INSIDE/OUTSIDE VERTICAL PUNCHES (15 REPS): You must start by throwing the yo-yos directly upward. On the decent from the initial vertical tosses, the first Vertical Punch with each hand must be an Inside Vertical Punch and the second Vertical Punch with each hand must be an Outside Vertical Punch. In other words, you must start alternating Vertical Punches immediately and perform at least 15 reps with each hand. Each rep consists of one Inside Vertical Punch and one Outside Vertical Punch with each hand. At no time, including during extra reps or during the ending, may you do two or more consecutive Inside or two or more consecutive Outside Vertical Punches with the same hand. The count will start on the second hand performing the first Outside Punch. All punches must be no more than 30 degrees from vertical.
  6. DOUBLE STAIRCASE: This trick consists of two complete Staircases, one to the left and one to the right, performed in order of choice. Trick starts with Milk the Cow in front or to one side and works it's way up to Vertical Punches while the player rotates 360 degrees into 5 or more reps of Vertical Punches after both feet are planted, then punch down into Milk the Cow and perform the same trick in the opposite direction ending with 5 or more reps of Vertical Punches after both feet are planted.
  7. COMBINED INSIDE/OUTSIDE REACH FOR THE MOONS (15 REPS): Starting with the first rep, the yo-yos must alternate from the inside of each throw hand on the upward vertical tosses to the outside of each throw hand on the downward trajectory. As the yo-yo descends it is thrown out and upward with an outside loop motion to complete the first rep. As the yo-yo returns a second inside upward toss is made as in a standard Reach for the Moon and again as the yo-yo descends it is thrown out and upward with an outside loop motion to complete the second rep. The count will start on the second hand performing the first outside loop.
  8. COW WRAP COMBO: Start with Hop the Fence with one hand, and then throw a retro Around the World with the other hand.  As you complete the retro Around the World let it wrap over the arm doing Hop the Fence. Complete at least 3 cow wraps around the Hop the Fences. Your "wrap string" is now in front of the Hop the Fence arm (exactly like when you started the wraps).  Pull the yo-yo over the Hop the Fence arm and transition into loops under the Hop the Fence arm. Complete 5or more reps of cross-arm loops and Hop The Fence and catch the yoyos. The rep count will be on the loops.
  10. BEHIND THE BACK CATTLE CROSSING (20 REP MINIMUM): (Combined tiebreaker) - The Yo-Yo trajectories must cross on the first throw of each hand and must stayed crossed for all twenty or more reps. The count starts on the first throw of the second yo-yo as it crosses the trajectory of the first yo-yo. The yo-yos must cross near the centerline of the contestant's back. Complete 20 or more reps on first try for 5 points, continue until you miss for use as first tiebreaker. Complete 20 or more reps on second try for 3 points, continue until you miss for use as second tiebreaker. Each contestant will try this trick two times.

3A Compulsory Trickset:[]

  1. ASSISTED BRAIN TWISTER (3 REP): Throw a sleeper with yo-yo #1, shorten the string to desired length by wrapping the string around Throwhand #1 and pinch string between thumb and index finger and hold yo-yo.
  2. VELVET ROLL (3 REP): Throw sleepers with yo-yos #1 and #2.
  3. 2-HAND DIZZY BABY (3 PINWHEEL): Throw sleepers with yo-yos #1 and #2.
  4. BOOMERANG (TRAPEZE, 3 REP, TRAPEZE): Throw yo-yo #1 into a sideways sleeper with a breakaway type toss.
  5. GUN SLINGER (3 REP, 3 REVERSE): Throw sleepers with yo-yos #1 and #2.
  6. BLUE LINE ROLL (3 REP): Throw sleepers with yo-yos #1 and #2.
  7. 2-HAND PLASTIC WHIP (AT THE SAME TIME): Simultaneously throw yo-yos #1 and 2 into sideways sleepers with breakaway type tosses. Now, perform simultaneous lacerations with each hand catching each yo-yo in a one-hand trapeze hold over your thumb or index finger. Simultaneously drop the strings off the fingers (or thumbs) back into sleepers and catch the yo-yos.
  8. KINK FU: Throw yo-yo #1 into a sideways sleeper. Note that you can do the Trapeze mount first and then the sideways split bottom mount if you wish. .
  9. BUCKETS O'KINK: Throw yo-yo #1 into a sideways sleeper.
  10. 2-HAND TRAPEZE: Simultaneously throw breakaways with both hands and land each yo-yo in a trapeze mount. Dismount the yo-yos up and over the index fingers back into sleepers and catch the yo-yos.

Tiebreaker: 2-HAND TRAPEZE (CONTINUOUSLY)

4A Compulsory Trickset:[]

  1. GRIND & WHIP: Throw a foreward pass mount. create a loop of string with your throw hand. Toss the yoyo in the air and grind on the pointer finger of your freehand. Toss the yoyo into the air and perform a whip catch. Return to hand in any way.
  2. 1 HANDED REGENERATION (EIJI'S OS REGENERATION): Perform a one handed launch by releasing the yoyo and tugging the string to launch it straight up. Drape the string over your shoulder or bicep. Catch the yoyo on the string and allow it to begin a return. Regenerate the spin by perfroming a loop the loop motion. Catch the yoyo in a forward pass mount and return to hand in any way.

  4. INFINITE STAR (5 TIMES AROUND EACH FINGER): Throw a foreward pass mount across your body and create a solid loop w/ your throw hand. Create a "rolling star" mount in any way. Orbit the yoyo around the segment on one pointer finger and continue around the opposite pointer in a figure eight(or infinity) motion. Repeat the orbits 5 times and return to your hand in any way.
  5. SEN POPPIN (3 REPS): Throw a foreward pass mount and create a loop w/ your throw hand. Toss the yoyo up, hitting the top string and switch the position of your hands(front to back and vice versa). Toss the yoyo up hitting the top string and switch the position of your hands back to their original place. Complete 5 reps of this(one rep = 2 hops). Return the yoyo to your hand in any way.
  6. FLOP (HIRO VER.): Throw a forward pass mount and create a loop w/ your throw hand. Toss the yoyo up and catch it on the other segment. This should put the yoyo between the segments and create a twist in the string. Spread the segments, pull the strings and tilt your hands to the throw side to flop the yoyo 180 degrees. Return the yoyo to your hand in any way.
  7. RISING BOINGY(5 HORIZONTAL BOINGY BOINGY TO 5 VERTICAL BOINGY BOINGY): Throw a forward pass mount and create a loop of string with your throw hand. Throw the yoyo directly into horizontal boingy boingy and perform a minimum of 5 reps(two bounces is one rep). Continue to boingy and rise the boing into a vertical boing. perform a minimum of 5 reps of vertical boingy boingy(one up bounce and one down bounce is one rep). return the yoyo to your hand in any way.
  8. OS REGENERATION COMBO(FOREWARD PASS MOUNT TO BOTTOM MOUNT TO FOREWARD PASS MOUNT TO SHOOT THE MOON REGEN): Throw a forward pass mount. Begin to return the yoyo and regenerate the spin into a bottom mount with a hop the fence motion. Begin to return the yoyo and regenerate the spin w/ a loop the loop motion. Create a solid loop of string with your throw hand. Begin a one handed return of the yoyo and regenerate the spin w/ a shoot the moon motion. Return the yoyo to your hand in any way.
  9. THREE WHIP CATCHES ON ONE THROW (UPSTROKE, REGULAR AND BEHIND THE BACK): Throw a forward pass mount. Toss the yoyo up and perform a whip catch by whipping the string in an upward swing. Return the yoyo to your hand in any way.
  10. HEAD BOUNCE TO WHIP CATCH: Throw a forward pass mount and create a loop of string with your throw hand. Toss the yoyo up and perform a head bounce(soccer style). Catch the yoyo with a whip catch. Return the yoyo to your hand in any way.

Tiebreaker:

OS REGENERATION (FPR TO BTM TO FPM CONTINUOUSLY)

5A Compulsory Trickset:[]

  1. 360 360 720: Throw a trapeze, perform a somersault under your Freehand and release the counterweight allowing the counterweight to travel in one (1) complete circle around the Freehand and catch the counterweight.
  2. AERIAL (3 REP; FROM BOTTOM MOUNT): Throw a sleeper into a bottom mount, dismount the yo-yo and let go of the counterweight allowing the momentum of the yo-yo to cause one full (1) rotation of string in the air. Catch the string or counterweight with your Throwhand at or near the end of the rotation to complete the first rep. On the same sleeper complete two (2) more reps and catch the yo-yo.
  3. NUNCHUCK COMBO (STEVE VER.): Throw a sleeper over your Freehand index finger and perform one Pinwheel continuing directly into a -split bottom mount.
  4. KUNG FU AERIAL (EXACTLY SAME AS DUNCAN TRICK BOOK): Kung Fu Aerial (exactly as in Duncan trick book): Throw a sleeper into a bottom mount, unwind to release the yo-yo and throw the counterweight allowing one(1) full rotation in the air, catch the yo-yo with the string draped over your shoulder (yo-yo in front, counterweight in back), grab the counterweight with your Freehand under your throw arm, toss the yo-yo back over your shoulder as you pull the counterweight free, transfer the yo-yo to your original Throwhand and catch the yo-yo.
  5. ELECTRONIC FAN (3 REP; FROM TRAPEZE; ANY DISMOUNT IS OK): Throw a trapeze, perform a somersault under your Freehand and release the counterweight allowing it to make one (1) full rotation, catch the string (not the counterweight) after the somersault, reverse the direction of the counterweight's swing, perform three (3) reverse somersaults over your Freehand while swinging the counterweight, in the same direction, ahead of the yo-yo. End trick with any dismount.
  6. BEESTING (1 REP; FROM TRAPEZE): Throw a trapeze, release the counterweight, swinging it under your Freehand allowing it to unmount the yo-yo, as the string comes around the other side throw the yo-yo over your Freehand in the opposite direction onto the string creating a reverse (backspin) mount, catch the counterweight with your Throwhand, allowing yo-yo to continue back into a trapeze mount. End trick with any dismount.
  7. ONE-HAND UNDER MOUNT: Throw a sleeper, swing the yo-yo forward and slide your Throwhand away from the counterweight and to the center of the string, allow the counterweight to swing under the yo-yo and mount it on the string as it travels around, catch the counterweight with Throwhand. End trick with any dismount.
  8. WIND MILL (3 REP): Throw a breakaway, intersect the string with your Freehand index finger as in trapeze, as the yo-yo travels around release the counterweight and allow it to trail the path of the yo-yo. Do not allow the yo-yo to mount onto the string. As the counterweight comes around, catch it with your original Throwhand to complete one rep. From the counterweight release complete two more reps. At the end of the third rep allow yo-yo to go into a trapeze mount. End trick with any dismount.
  9. SHOULDER POP (FROM BOTTOM MOUNT): Shoulder Pop: Throw a split bottom mount, drop the string from your Freehand, throw a somersault and release the counterweight, allowing the string to unmount from the yo-yo as the counterweight swings around. Allow the counterweight to strike near your shoulder causing it to change its rotation direction. As it comes around in the opposite direction allow the string to remount on the yo-yo and catch the counterweight. End trick with any one-hand dismount.
  10. ELI HOP CHOP (4 REP; TERRY VER.): Eli Hop Chop (4 chops; Terry version.): Throw a trapeze, (opening) pop the yo-yo up, release the counterweight, grab the string with your Freehand and perform an undercut (chop) with your original Throwhand and mount the yo-yo in a "switch trapeze", pop the yo-yo up, release the string from your original Freehand, grab the string with your original Throwhand and perform an undercut (chop) with your original Freehand landing the yo-yo in a regular trapeze.

2005[]

1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A were the same as their 2004 lists. 5a had some changes

5A Compulsory Trickset:[]

  1. 360 360 720: Throw a trapeze, perform a somersault under your Freehand and release the counterweight allowing the counterweight to travel in one (1) complete circle around the Freehand and catch the counterweight.
  2. AERIAL COMBO (STANDARD, KUNG-FU, AND BEHIND THE BACK): Throw a sleeper into a bottom mount, dismount the yo-yo and let go of the counterweight allowing the momentum of the yo-yo to cause one full (1) rotation of string in the air. Catch the string or counterweight with your Throwhand at or near the end of the rotation to complete the first aerial. Go into a bottom mount again. Unwind to release the yo-yo and throw the counterweight allowing one(1) full rotation in the air, catch the yo-yo with the string draped over your shoulder (yo-yo in front, counterweight in back), grab the counterweight with your Freehand under your throw arm, toss the yo-yo back over your shoulder as you pull the counterweight free, transfer the yo-yo to your original Throwhand. As the yo-yo rotates around, let go of the counterweight allowing the momentum of the yo-yo to cause one full (1) rotation of string in the air. Catch the string or counterweight with your behind your back at or near the end of the rotation. Return the yo-yo to your hand in any way.
  3. FREEHAND MELTDOWN: Throw a one and a half mount and remove your Freehand index finger so the entire mount is on your Throwhand.  Do a pinwheel to the outside of your body and release the counterweight.  As the counterweight rotates around, have the string go through the gap and catch the weight in your Freehand.  You will be in a switch trapeze.  Dismount the switch trapeze and remount into a standard trapeze.  Swing the yo-yo into a trapeze and his brother.  Do a pinwheel to the inside of your body.  As the counterweight rotates around, again have it thread through the gap and catch the weight in your Freehand.  You should be in an over mount.  Dismount the yo-yo and remount in a standard trapeze.  Return the yo-yo to your hand in any way.
  4. NUNCHUCK COMBO (STEVE BROWN VERSION.): Throw a sleeper over your Freehand index finger and perform one Pinwheel continuing directly into a -split bottom mount. Drop the string from your Freehand, perform a somersault and release the counterweight allowing the string to unmount from the yo-yo and rotate under and over your Throwhand shoulder. Catch the counterweight with your Freehand in "shoulder hold" Pull the yo-yo over your shoulder allowing it to travel around your shoulder a second time, release the counterweight as the yo-yo travels around, grab the string (not the counterweight) and swing the counterweight around your shoulder back into a second "shoulder hold." Grab the counterweight with your Freehand and pull the yo-yo over one final time, transfer the counterweight to your original Throwhand and return the yo-yo to your hand in any way.
  5. ELECTRONIC FAN (3 REP FROM TRAPEZE): Throw a trapeze, perform a somersault under your Freehand and release the counterweight allowing it to make one (1) full rotation, catch the string (not the counterweight) after the somersault, reverse the direction of the counterweight's swing, perform three (3) reverse somersaults over your Freehand while swinging the counterweight, in the same direction, ahead of the yo-yo. End trick with any dismount.
  6. BEESTING (1 REP FROM TRAPEZE): Throw a trapeze, release the counterweight, swinging it under your Freehand allowing it to unmount the yo-yo, as the string comes around the other side throw the yo-yo over your Freehand in the opposite direction onto the string creating a reverse (backspin) mount, catch the counterweight with your Throwhand, allowing yo-yo to continue back into a trapeze mount.
  9. SHOULDER POP (FROM BOTTOM MOUNT): Throw a split bottom mount, drop the string from your Freehand, throw a somersault and release the counterweight, allowing the string to unmount from the yo-yo as the counterweight swings around. Allow the counterweight to strike near your shoulder causing it to change its rotation direction. As it comes around in the opposite direction allow the string to remount on the yo-yo and catch the counterweight. End trick with any one-hand dismount.
  10. ELI HOP CHOP (4 CHOPS, TERRY VERSION.): Throw a trapeze, (opening) pop the yo-yo up, release the counterweight, grab the string with your Freehand and perform an undercut (chop) with your original Throwhand and mount the yo-yo in a "switch trapeze", pop the yo-yo up, release the string from your original Freehand, grab the string with your original Throwhand and perform an undercut (chop) with your original Freehand landing the yo-yo in a regular trapeze. Repeat from (opening) and perform two more chops into a second "switch trapeze" and a final regular trapeze for a total of four (4) chops. End trick with any dismount.

Tiebreaker: Shoulder Pop (from Bottom Mount). Trick performed continuously until extinction of yo-yo. Most reps wins.

2006[]

Please note: Bind returns are allowed for all tricks but not required. A failed bind return will be considered a miss.

At each trick station all tricks must be performed using the same yo-yo. You may change the yo-yo between each trick station. Stations will be announced on the day of the event.

1A Compulsory Trickset:[]

  1. FLYING TRAPEZE GREEN TRIANGLES (4 REPS ON ONE SPIN): (This would later be renamed to the trick Ninja Vanish) Rules: Trapeze mount. Dismount from trapeze while holding string with Freehand. Pinch string with Freehand and pull up on the yo-yo with and slack string up and over the string segment held between the Throwhand and Freehand (note that the slack segment should go over string from in front of string to between the string and your body.) Catch the yo-yo on the slack string in a Green Triangle (GT). Dismount from GT, tossing yo-yo away from the body, while holding string with Freehand. Perform 3 or more reps. Return the yo-yo to your hand by the method of your choice. Judging Guidelines: Yo-yo must enter Green Triangle from in front of string segment held between the Throwhand and Freehand. All dismounts from the GT between reps must be thrown out and away from body. You must not release the string hold with Freehand between reps.
  2. KAMIKAZE: Rules: Throw a "Houdini Drop" double or nothing hold using the thumb and index finger of your Freehand. Reverse the direction of the roll and hit the bottom of the top string letting the yo-yo roll over your Throwhand index finger. Now reverse the direction of the roll one last time and release the string segment from your Freehand index finger and land the yo-yo on the bottom string in a Trapeze hold. Return the yo-yo to your hand by the method of your choice. Judging Guidelines: As noted in the Shock Wave rules and judging guidelines, while performing the Magic Drop you may not spread the string segment of the Trapeze hold with your thumb or fingers of your Freehand to aid in dropping the yo-yo onto the bottom string segment.
  3. SHOCK WAVE (4 REPS): Rules: (Change for 2006, changed from 5 reps to 4 reps) Trapeze mount. Next press your Throwhand thumb and index finger together and wrap the string under your thumb and over the outside of your index finger by rolling your wrist towards your body. Now perform a "Magic Drop" by opening your Throwhand thumb and index finger into a "V' as you let the yo-yo roll down the string under and over your Throwhand index finger onto the string segment nearest your body. You will now be holding the yo-yo in a modified trapeze mount with the string going over your Throwhand thumb and your Throwhand index finger spreading the string segment of the trapeze. Now, while making sure not to drop the string off your Throwhand thumb and index finger, let the yo-yo roll back down the string under and over your Freehand index finger landing on the string nearest your body. Now let the extra string segments simultaneously drop off your Throwhand thumb and index fingers. You should now be back in a trapeze hold, perform 3 more reps. Return yo-yo to your hand using the method of your choice. Note that you may only use your index finger of your freehand and can not spread the Trapeze hold with another finger or your thumb during the Magic Drop. Judging Guidelines: As noted above, while performing the Magic Drop you may not spread the string segment of the Trapeze hold with your thumb or fingers of your Freehand to aid in dropping the yo-yo onto the bottom string segment.
  4. SUICIDE CATCH (4 REPS): Rules: (change for 2006, changed from 5 reps to 4 reps) Trapeze mount. Next let the yo-yo roll down the string and under and over your Throwhand while releasing the Trapeze hold off your Freehand. Catch the loop formed by this maneuver back into a perfect Trapeze hold without any twists of the string segment. Perform three more Suicide catches back into perfect Trapeze holds. Return yo-yo to your hand using the method of your choice. Note that all Suicide catches must be made with the index finger only of your Freehand. Judging Guidelines: The judges will be looking for perfect untwisted Trapeze holds after each of the four Suicide Catches. The Trapeze mount is over the index finger only and it is not allowed to use your hand or fingers to open the loop while the yo-yo is on the trapeze.
  5. THROWHAND GRIND (3 GRINDS): Rules: (Change for 2006: One additional Grind) Trapeze mount, reverse pinwheel off trapeze into a grind on top or side of the Throwhand, slide the yo-yo back onto the string into a Trapeze hold. Perform 1 somersault, in the same direction as the pinwheel, letting the momentum of the somersault toss the yo-yo onto the top or side of the Throwhand into a second grind. Slide yo-yo off the top or side of the Throwhand onto the string back into a Trapeze hold. Repeat this step letting the momentum of the somersault toss the yo-yo onto the top or side of the Throwhand into a third grind. Slide yo-yo off the top or side of the Throwhand onto the string back into a Trapeze hold. Return yo-yo to your hand using the method of your choice. Judging Guidelines: On all three of the grinds the yo-yo must stay in contact with the top or side of the Throwhand and 'grind' for a short but perceivable period of time and can't merely bounce off the hand back into the Trapeze hold.
  6. ALTERNATING ELI HOP (4 HOPS): Rules: Start with Trapeze mount and perform a one standard Eli Hop catching the yo-yo in front of your wrist, then perform a second Eli Hop catching the yo-yo clearly behind your wrist, return the yo-yo to in front of your wrist and perform another hop in front of your wrist and another hop behind your wrist. Return yo-yo to your hand using the method of your choice. Hands must touch during each of the 4 hops. Judging Guidelines: In judging whether the catch is, clearly behind your wrist, the judges will look from side to make sure that the entire yo-yo is behind the wrist and hand when the yo-yo lands on the string. Close is not good enough on the four hand touches. If the judges see a gap between the hands which clearly indicates that the hands did not touch on one or more of the hops the attempt will be considered a miss.
  7. SLACK TRAPEZE (4 REPS): Rules: (change for 2006, changed from 3 reps to 4 reps) Throw a Trapeze. From the Trapeze hold complete 3 more reps. Return yo-yo to your hand using the method of your choice. Judging Guidelines: The string may not be twisted after any of the four slack mounts so that the yo-yo ends up in a perfect Trapeze hold after each slack mount.
  8. SPIRIT BOMB WITH "CHEESE WHIP" MOUNT: Rules: Throw a Trapeze, and then perform a "Cheese Whip" by throwing a slack loop under and over your Freehand, catching the loop over your Throwhand. Now swing the yo-yo over your Freehand index finger and on to the string segment that is centered under your catching hand, landing the yo-yo into a wrist-bucket mount. Pull your Freehand out of the hold so the yo-yo is hanging in the mount over your Throwhand. Now perform a double pass-under with Freehand index finger, Pop yo-yo up, bring Throwhand under and catch yo-yo on outermost string segment, Pop yo-yo up, uncross arms, and catch yo-yo over Freehand index finger back into Wrist-bucket Mount (Note that the yo-yo has to pass through the triangle formed over your Throwhand and land on bottom string segment), perform two pass-unders with Freehand index finger onto back string segment and pull into Trapeze hold. Return yo-yo to your hand using the method of your choice. Judging Guidelines: The key element the judges will be watching very closely is that after the last pop the yo-yo must pass through the triangle formed over your Throwhand and land on bottom string segment into a Wrist-bucket Mount.
  9. BLACK HOP: Rules: Start with Triple or Nothing mount over both index fingers (note that you can not throw the Triple or Nothing over your thumbs or other fingers to spread the strings apart), hop down to Trapeze in 4 hops then back to a hold similar (but not quite) to a Triple or Nothing in 4 hops (more like undercuts). After all 8 hops pull your Throwhand index finger out of the hold and rotate the Yo-Yo 2 revolutions into a Trapeze hold. Return yo-yo to your hand using the method of your choice. Judging Guidelines: One judge will view trick from the side to make sure that: the yo-yo lands only on the string segment furthest from your body on the Triple or Nothing catch and the yo-yo lands on only one string on each of the 8 hops (or undercuts) catches.
  10. IRON WHIPS (4 REPS): Rules: (Change for 2006: Changed from 3 reps to 4 reps and not a combined tiebreaker) Throw a Trapeze. Grab the upper string segment of the Trapeze hold with your Throwhand and pop the yo-yo upward off the string. With the loop formed by grabbing the string perform a whip catch of the yo-yo back into a one-hand Trapeze holx. Perform three more reps. Return yo-yo to your hand using the method of your choice. Judging Guidelines: The string must not be twisted after the whip catch back into the one-hand Trapeze hold. It should open into a perfect Trapeze hold if you separate the one-hand hold with your Freehand index finger.

Tiebreaker: Iron Whips: Most Whip catches on one spin wins.

2A Compulsory Trickset:[]

  1. ORBIT THE MOONS (3 REPS): Rules: (Change for 2006: reps reduced) Start with a forward pass outward toss with each hand and immediately punch each yo-yo into one and a half revolutions of retro-Around the World up into a Reach for the Moon. At the end of the outward toss of the Reach for the Moon punch each yo-yo into another one and a half revolutions of retro-Around the World back up into a another Reach for the Moon. Complete 3 or more reps and catch the yo-yos after the outward toss of the third Reach for the Moon. The reps may be performed either simultaneously or alternately. Judging Guidelines The judges will be watching to make sure that the player does not go into any of the Reach for the Moons until the second Around the World.
  2. ONE HANDED ARM WRAPS: Rules: (Change for 2006: Changed from Two Hand and from two to one Around the Worlds) Start with 3 or more reps of two hand loops. Transition one yo-yo into Around the World and wrap around the looping arm after the first World and perform 3 or more "loop wraps" with the wrap hand going under and over the loops, then transition back into two hand loops and perform 3 or more reps before catching the yo-yos. Judging Guidelines: When the Around the World yo-yo goes under the forearm doing loops the resulting wrap must be to the inside between the string and elbow. No criss-cross loops will be allowed on the transition from the last Arm Wrap back into two hand loops.
  3. WRIST-CROSSED FOUNTAIN (3-3-3-3): Rules: (Change for 2006: reps reduced) Start with hands crossed and perform 3 or more wrist-crossed Hop the Fences with each hand below 45 degrees from the vertical, followed by a transition to 3 or more wrist-crossed Punching Bags with each hand between 45-135 degrees from the vertical, followed by a transition to 3 or more wrist-crossed Vertical Punches between 160-200 degrees. Then punch back down to 3 or more wrist-crossed Punching Bags with each hand between 45-135 degrees from the vertical, then punch back down to 3 or more wrist-crossed Hop the Fences below 45 degrees from the vertical and catch the yo-yos while hands are still crossed. Judging Guidelines: Judging Guidelines: The Vertical Punches should be perform essentially directly overhead at a 180 degrees however the judges will allow a range of about 20 degrees from each side of vertical.
  4. TANGLER COMBO: Rules: Start with one or more reps of Around the World with each hand and get into the first Tangler. Perform 2 or more Tangler revolutions and get out of the Tangler while turning 360 degrees and while doing around Around the Worlds. Following the turn, immediately go into the second Tangler on the first full Around the World rep and perform 2 or more Tangler revolutions. Get out of the Tangler and catch the Yo-Yos. Judging Guidelines: You may shorten the strings by wrapping them around your hands while doing the Worlds. You may do a few loops after coming out of the second Tangler as long as there is no significant loss of control of either yo-yo.
  5. INSIDE/OUTSIDE VERTICAL PUNCHES (10 REPS) Rules: (Change for 2006: reps reduced) You must start by throwing the yo-yos directly upward. On the decent from the initial vertical tosses, the first Vertical Punch with each hand must be an Inside Vertical Punch and the second Vertical Punch with each hand must be an Outside Vertical Punch. In other words, you must start alternating Vertical Punches immediately and complete 10 or more reps with each hand before catching the yo-yos. At no time, including during extra any reps or during the ending, may you do two or more consecutive Inside or two or more consecutive Outside Vertical Punches with the same hand. The count will start on the second hand performing the first Outside Punch. All punches must be no more than 30 degrees from vertical. Judging Guidelines: The critical judging element the judges will evaluate is whether or not the first vertical punch with each hand is to the inside and that player immediately starts alternating between inside and outside vertical punches and never does two consecutive punches to the same side of their hand.
  6. DOUBLE STAIRCASE: Rules: (Change for 2006: reps of vertical punches reduced) This trick consists of two complete Staircases, one to the left and one to the right, performed in order of choice. Trick starts with Milk the Cow in front or to one side and works it's way up to Vertical Punches while the player rotates 360 degrees into 3 or more reps of Vertical Punches after both feet are planted, then punch down into Milk the Cow and perform the same trick in the opposite direction ending with 3 or more reps of Vertical Punches after both feet are planted. Judging Guidelines: A complete 360 degree rotation will be based on the starting and ending position of the player's upper body and not based on the position of the player's feet before and after the rotation. The Vertical Punches should be performed essentially directly overhead at a 180 degrees however the judges will allow a range of about 20 degrees from each side of vertical.
  7. INSIDE/OUTSIDE REACH FOR THE MOONS (10 REPS): Rules: (Change for 2006: reps reduced) Starting with the first rep, the yo-yos must alternate from the inside of each throw hand on the upward vertical tosses to the outside of each throw hand on the downward trajectory. Complete 10 or more reps with each hand and catch the yo-yos. The count will start on the second hand performing the first outside loop motion. Judging Guidelines: The judges will what closely to make sure that the yo-yos always go outside the arms and to the sides on the downward.
  8. COW WRAP COMBO: Rules: (Change for 2006, cow rap reps reduced) Start with Hop the Fence with one hand, and then throw a retro Around the World with the other hand. Complete 3 or more reps of cross-arm loops and Hop the Fence and catch the yoyos. The rep count will be on the loops. Judging Guidelines: When the retro Around the World yo-yo goes over the arm doing Hop the Fence the resulting wrap must be to the inside between the string and elbow. After each cow wrap the yo-yo should be hanging unwrapped over the front of the arm doing Hop the Fence. Significant loss of control on the cross-arm loops will be a miss.
  9. KURUKURU PINWHEEL WRAP: Rules: (Change for 2006: pinwheel reps reduced) Start with retro Around The Worlds with each hand thrown simultaneously to one side of your body. Let the yo-yo in one hand wrap over the other arm as it completes the first retro World and let it spin (sleep) while it is hanging there. Let the other yo-yo string wrap around your hand while it performs retro Worlds. When you think the string is the right length on that hand, grab the other string that is hanging over your other arm and start pin wheeling both yoyos. After 3 or more pinwheels with both yoyos, throw half retro Worlds to one side with both hands and transition up into Vertical Punches. Complete 3 or more reps of two hand Vertical Punches and catch the yo-yos. Judging Guidelines: Kurukuru pinwheels implies that the hands must overlap and roll over each other during the pinwheels so that the yo-yos are rotating basically in the same plane. If the hands separate during any of the pinwheels it will be a miss. See side view of video.
  10. BEHIND THE BACK CATTLE CROSSING (15 REP MINIMUM): Rules: The Yo-Yo trajectories must cross on the first throw of each hand and must stayed crossed for all 15 or more reps. The count starts on the first throw of the second yo-yo as it crosses the trajectory of the first yo-yo. The yo-yos must cross near the centerline of the contestant's back. Complete 15 or more reps and catch the yo-yos. Judging Guidelines: The judges will look closely at each yo-yo as it reaches the end of the string on each hop. Some part of each yo-yo must overlap the end point of the trajectory of the other yo-yo during each rep. The strings should cross so it is clear that the trajectories are crossing but it is only necessary a small part the yo-yos actually cross. If the judges are sure there is a gap between yo-yos during any of the 15 reps it will be a miss.

Tiebreaker: Inside/Outside Reach for the Moons. Most reps with each hand wins.

3A Compulsory Trickset:[]

  1. TWO HANDED DIZZY BABY: Rules: Throw sleepers with yo-yos #1 and #2.
  2. 2-HAND TRAPEZE: Rules: Simultaneously throw breakaways with both hands and land each yo-yo in a trapeze mount. Dismount the yo-yos up and over the index fingers back into sleepers and catch the yo-yos.
  3. BUCKETS O'KINK: Rules: Throw yo-yo #1 into a sideways sleeper.
  4. ASSISTED MACH 5-2: Rules: Throw sleepers with yo-yos #1 and #2. Shorten the string of yo-yo #1 to desired length by wrapping the string around Throwhand #1. Note, as shown in the video, you can throw yo-yo #1 first and shorten string before throwing yo-yo #2 if you so desire. Now place the string of yo-yo #2 in front of yo-yo #1 and place it over yo-yo #1. Perform a Split Bottom mount with yo-yo#2. Now perform 3 or more revolutions of the "modified" Mach 5 hold. Drop both yo-yos out of the Mach 5 hold down into sleepers and catch the yo-yos.
  5. GUN SLINGER: Rules: Throw sleepers with yo-yos #1 and #2.
  6. KINKFU: Rules: Throw yo-yo #1 into a sideways sleeper. Note that you can do the Trapeze mount first and then the sideways split bottom mount if you wish. .
  7. BLUE LINE ROLLS: Rules: Throw sleepers with yo-yos #1 and #2.
  8. PLASTIC WHIP: Rules: Simultaneously throw yo-yos #1 and 2 into sideways sleepers with breakaway type tosses. Now, perform simultaneous lacerations with each hand catching each yo-yo in a one-hand trapeze hold over your thumb or index finger. Simultaneously drop the strings off the fingers (or thumbs) back into sleepers and catch the yo-yos.
  9. VELVET ROLLS: Rules: Throw sleepers with yo-yos #1 and #2.
  10. TWO HANDED ASSISTED SUICIDE: Rules: Start by throwing a one and a half mount with yo-yo #1. Release #2 hand index finger so that the yo-yo is draped over Throwhand #1 index finger. Now throw yo-yo #2 and wrap string around Throwhand #2 to desired hold point. Now roll yo-yo #1 under and over Throwhand #1 and release the yo-yo and catch the loop of the string onto yo-yo #2 without any string twists in the loop of yo-yo #1. The loop can go over either the inside or outside half of the yo-yo #2. Dismount yo-yo # 1 from yo-yo #2 back to Sleeper using the method of your choice and drop yo-yo #2 back to a Sleeper. Return the yo-yos to your hands by the method of your choice.

Tiebreaker: 2-hand Trapeze: Most reps on one throw of each yo-yo wins. Dismount after each successful rep and try trick again without catching the yo-yos.

4A Compulsory Trickset:[]

  1. GRIND & WHIP: Rules: Throw a foreward pass mount. create a loop of string with your throw hand. Toss the yoyo in the air and grind on the pointer finger of your freehand. Toss the yoyo into the air and perform a whip catch. Return to hand in any way.
  2. ONE HANDED REGENERATION (EIJI'S OS REGENERATION): Rules: Perform a one handed launch by releasing the yoyo and tugging the string to launch it straight up. Drape the string over your shoulder or bicep. Catch the yoyo on the string and allow it to begin a return. Regenerate the spin by perfroming a loop the loop motion. Catch the yoyo in a foreward pass mount and return to hand in any way.
  3. AROUND THE LEG ORBITS (5 REPS): Rules: Throw a foreward pass mount across your body. Place your leg over the string and toss from one side to the other(inside to outside or outside to inside is ok). Perform 5 reps and return to hand in any way.
  4. SEN POPPIN (5 REPS): Rules: Throw a foreward pass mount and create a loop w/ your throw hand.
  5. RISING BOINGY(5 HORIZONTAL BOINGY BOINGY TO 5 VERTICAL BOINGY BOINGY): Rules: Throw a foreward pass mount and create a loop of string with your throw hand.
  6. OS REGENERATION COMBO(FOREWARD PASS MOUNT TO BOTTOM MOUNT TO FOREWARD PASS MOUNT TO SHOOT THE MOON REGEN): Rules: Throw a foreward pass mount.
  7. THREE WHIP CATCHES ON ONE THROW(UPSTROKE, REGULAR AND BEHIND THE BACK): Rules: Throw a foreward pass mount. Toss the yoyo up and perfrom a whip catch by whipping the string in an upward swing. Toss the yoyo up and perform a regular whip catch in a downward swing. Toss the yoyo up and perform any whip catch behind your back. Perform these three whips in any order. Return the yoyo to your hand in any way.
  8. HEAD BOUNCE TO WHIP CATCH: Rules: Throw a foreward pass mount and create a loop of string with your throw hand. Toss the yoyo up and perform a head bounce(soccer style). Catch the yoyo with a whip catch. Return the yoyo to your hand in any way.
  9. BACK BURNER COMBO: Rules: Throw a forward pass mount. Roll yo-yo under and over Throwhand shoulder and catch the yo-yo back on string. Repeat this move one more time. On the next roll catch the yo-yo with an overhand whip type catch. Repeat this move one more time. Return the yoyo to your hand in any way.
  10. OPEN STRING WHIP (2 REPS): Rules: Launch yo-yo with a forward pass motion and with your Throwhand throw string "Around the World" and perform an open string whip catch. Without returning yo-yo to your hand perform a second launch and catch yo-yo with a second open string whip catch. Return the yoyo to your hand in any way.

Tiebreaker: OS Regeneration (keep alternating between forward pass mounts and bottom mounts until you miss.): Most total successful mounts wins.

5A Compulsory Trickset:[]

  1. BEESTING: Rules: Throw a trapeze, release the counterweight, swinging it under your free hand allowing it to unmount the yo-yo, as the string comes around the other side throw the yo-yo over your free hand in the opposite direction onto the string creating a reverse (backspin) mount, catch the counter weight with your throw hand, allowing yo-yo to continue back into a trapeze mount. End trick with any dismount.
  2. BUTTERFLY: Rules: Start with a single rep of sideways pinwheel holding the string close to the middle section. As you complete the pinwheel, throw the counterweight in the direction opposite to the pinwheel and behind the yo-yo's trajectory. Cross the counter-weight and the yo-yo's trajectories at the bottom, this time with the counter-weight's trajectory in front, to complete one rep. Execute 4 more repetitions. As the last repetition is completed, catch the counter-weight or the string segment close to it and end with a Trapeze. End trick with any dismount. Judging Guidelines: The yo-yo string must not wrap completely around the free hand index finger during the entire trick.
  3. NUNCHUCK COMBO: Rules: Throw a sleeper over your free hand index finger and perform one Pinwheel continuing directly into a -split bottom mount. Drop the string from your Freehand, perform a somersault and release the counter weight allowing the string to unmount from the yo-yo and rotate under and over your throw hand shoulder. Catch the counter weight with your free hand in "shoulder hold" Pull the yo-yo over your shoulder allowing it to travel around your shoulder a second time, release the counter weight as the yo-yo travels around, grab the string (not the counter weight) and swing the counter weight around your shoulder back into a second "shoulder hold." Grab the counterweight with your Freehand and pull the yo-yo over one final time, transfer the counter weight to your original throw hand and return the yo-yo to your hand in any way.
  4. STALL: Rules: Throw a one and a half mount and remove your free hand index finger so the entire mount is on your Throwhand. Do a pinwheel to the outside of your body and release the counter weight. As the counter weight rotates around, switch the string to your throw hand's middle finger and have the string go through the yo-yo gap. Let the string bypass your hand entirely and wrap around the yo-yo axle. Swing the yo-yo towards your free hand to stop the circular motion and swing it back to make the counter weight rotate the other way around. Let it unwrap from the yo-yo axle and un-mount from the yo-yo entirely. Switch the string back to your throw hand's index finger and let the counter weight go through the gap again and end with a bottom mount. End trick with any dismount.
  5. ONE HAND MOUNT: Rules: (note last year we called this trick "One-hand Under Mount") Throw a sleeper, swing the yo-yo forward and slide your throw hand away from the counter weight and to the center of the string, allow the counter weight to swing under the yo-yo and mount it on the string as it travels around, catch the counter weight with Throwhand. End trick with any dismount.
  6. ELI HOP CHOPS: Rules: Throw a trapeze, (opening) pop the yo-yo up, release the counter weight, grab the string with your free hand and perform an undercut (chop) with your original throw hand and mount the yo-yo in a "switch trapeze", pop the yo-yo up, release the string from your original Freehand, grab the string with your original throw hand and perform an undercut (chop) with your original free hand landing the yo-yo in a regular trapeze. Repeat from (opening) and perform two more chops into a second "switch trapeze" and a final regular trapeze for a total of four (4) chops. End trick with any dismount.
  7. SHOULDER POP: Rules: Throw a split bottom mount, drop the string from your Freehand, throw a somersault and release the counter weight, allowing the string to unmount from the yo-yo as the counter weight swings around. Allow the counter weight to strike near your shoulder causing it to change its rotation direction. As it comes around in the opposite direction allow the string to remount on the yo-yo and catch the counter weight. End trick with any one-hand dismount.
  8. WINDMILL: Rules: Throw a breakaway, intersect the string with your free hand index finger as in trapeze, as the yo-yo travels around release the counter weight and allow it to trail the path of the yo-yo. Do not allow the yo-yo to mount onto the string. As the counter weight comes around, catch it with your original throw hand to complete one rep. From the counter weight release complete two more reps. At the end of the third rep allow yo-yo to go into a trapeze mount. End trick with any dismount.
  9. FREEHAND MELT DOWN: Rules: Throw a one and a half mount and remove your free hand index finger so the entire mount is on your throw hand. Do a pinwheel to the outside of your body and release the counter weight. As the counter weight rotates around, have the string go through the gap and catch the weight in your free hand. You will be in a switch trapeze. Dismount the switch trapeze and remount into a standard trapeze. Swing the yo-yo into a trapeze and his brother. Do a pinwheel to the inside of your body. As the counter-weight rotates around, again have it thread through the gap and catch the weight in your free hand. You should be in an over mount. Dismount the yo-yo and remount in a standard trapeze. Return the yo-yo to your hand in any way.
  10. UNDER THE LEG TRAPEZE: Rules: Throw a one and a half mount and remove your free hand index finger so the entire mount is on your throw hand. Do a pinwheel to the outside of your body and release the counter-weight. Have the yo-yo travel around your throw hand and under the throw hand-side leg and release the string. As the counter-weight travels around and un-mounts from the yo-yo, intercept the string with your throw hand index finger and end with a reverse trapeze. Un-mount the trapeze, switch the counter-weight back to your throw hand and return the yo-yo to your hand.

Tiebreaker: Shoulder Pop from Bottom Mount: Trick performed continuously until extinction of yo-yo. Most reps wins.

After 2006, preliminary freestyles took over and the Compulsory Round was rendered obsolete.
