Ian Johnson hails from a small town in northern Illinois called Hebron, but currently resides in Los Angeles while he attends school at UCLA. He picked up the yoyo at the age of 10 in December of 2004 and hasn't put it down since. He is an avid offstring (4a) competitor, but was also a freehand (5a) competitor for some time (highest placements being 1st at MWR/6th at US Nationals). He also enjoys playing 1a for fun for its creative aspects and cathartic benefits. In 2011, Ian appeared with his yoyos on NBC's America's Got Talent, where he made it to the quarterfinals (top 48) before he was eliminated.
In 2013, Ian completed a flawless 4a routine at the US National Yoyo Contest to seal his victory as the 2013 National Champion.
In 2014, Ian achieved 4th place at the World Yoyo Contest in Prague, Czech Republic.
In 2023, Ian returned to competing at the 2023 US National Champions. He won pre-lims after going flawless and ended up finishing 3rd in the Finals for 4a.
Aside from competing, Ian enjoys performing, playing guitar, skateboarding, music/concerts/festivals, hanging out with friends, and many other activities.
