Joel Zink was the 1999 World and U.S. National 1A Yo-Yo Champion.
Controversy[]
His 1999 routine was highly controversial, as it had primarily comprised of easy tricks performed in an overly flashy style, whereas other competitors performed more difficult tricks. The routine is also recognized for his costume, which was covered in shiny sequins.
In light of his winning the world title, major changes in the judging system were implemented to more accurately score trick difficulty instead of performative elements.
