The Ape-X is a high-end return top that was first released in 2014 by MonkeyfingeR Design.
Description[]
The Ape-X, developed for use in competition play, is an aluminum return top that possesses some of the usual creative charm and attention to detail that MonkeyfingeR had to offer.
The profile is almost a rounded Butterfly shape, but on closer inspection, there's a slight H-Shape, too. The rims start off with a natural curve before halting at an ever-so-slight step down before continuing the curve towards the gap. Near the gap, there is the step out common in most modern return top designs. The side faces are completely open with only a wide, slightly protruding hub to break up the floor. Under the rims is an IRG lip. The finish combines polishing and beadblasting, making it comfortable to hold in the hand and providing a great feeling of play with its rounded edges.
Speedy on the string but not quite feeling out of place at slower RPM's, the Ape-X features Monkey Snot flowable silicone response and a steel 10-ball C-bearing for unresponsive play straight out of the trinagular box that it comes in. As usual, the silicone grooves can accept Large Slim-sized response pads. It also comes included with a carrying pouch.
Trivia[]
- The Ape-X's name is a play on words of "ape" and "apex", the latter of which (as a verb) meaning to reach a high point. Not too surprising since it was designed for competition-level play.
- Its design elements would be combined with those of the G-Squared Triton to develop the Co-Lab. Along with that, its design cues were also implemented by MonkeyfingeR team players in the Tri-B's development.
