The Master is a yo-yo produced by Russell, intended to be given away as raffle prizes, in similar fashion to the Galaxy yo-yo.
Typically, it is a cosmetic variant of the Professional or Super, made in the classic bulge-faced shape, with a black-colored bulge with gold prints.
Design Variations[]
The form that is usually associated with the name "Master" was introduced in 1981 in South Africa as the "Breakdancer" yo-yo. It was an all-black variant of the Professional model with gold prints, which can be won as a prize during the campaign.
However, the name "Master" first appeared in 1982 in Colombia as an all-black variant of the Professional model with gold prints. In Brazil, A "Master" yo-yo was also released, not as a black yo-yo with gold prints, but as a prize yo-yo with a red body and clear glittered sidecaps.
In 1986, a "Master" yo-yo was released as a prize yo-yo in Brazil. The gold prints feature laurel print designs. This design would also appear in the Spanish "Olimpic" yo-yo from 1988 and the Mexican version of the Master yo-yo in 1991.
Then in 1989, it was introduced in the United States as a cosmetic variant of the Super. It had a clear body, and black caps, but the print is not in gold. The 1992 version would add the gold prints to the yo-yo, and make the body black as well. The 1996 version removed the gold yet again.
In the 2000's, the name "Master" was used in various limited edition slimline yo-yos, some of which are modular, and can be installed with a removable wooden shaft with rubber o-rings (making it a fixed wooden axle yo-yo) or a metal ball bearing with spacers (making it a high performance ball bearing yo-yo).
