For the Grind Machine's direct successor, see YoYoFactory Grind Machine 2. For the plastic yo-yo that currently carries the Grind Machine name, see YoYoFactory Plastic Grind Machine.

The Grind Machine was the very first release in YoYoFactory's Redline (now known as Project Red Alert) series, and their first metal yo-yo that did not use the F.A.S.T. response system, instead coming included with three sets of interchangeable response pads, each made of a different material for a different feel.

One set of pads is made of the same type of rubber as used in the erasers of no. 2 pencils, and has a moderate to aggressive level of response. The second pad type is made of a three-ply material commonly used in the construction of inflatable river rafts, and is aggressively responsive. The third and final pad type is made of faux leather, like that used in belts, with its texture allowing for a smoother, more forgiving responsiveness.

The pads can be mixed and matched so that the user could adjust the yo-yo's responsiveness to his or her own personal preferences.

The F.A.S.T. starburst components were still present internally, holding the lens caps in place. The Grind Machine also comes included with a set of extra thick spacers for adjusting the string gap width.

There were two different production runs of the Grind Machine. The first run is in a dark green color (100 yo-yos made), and the second run is colored in a shade of ice blue mixed with green and including the new "Gap Gadget" adjustable string gap (200 yo-yos made) first seen in the Grind Monster. Over the yo-yo's lifespan, a total of 300 Grind Machines were produced.
