YoYo Wiki

The Hyper Brain (Japanese: ハイパーブレイン) is a yo-yo manufactured by Yomega and released by Bandai in Japan on June 1997 for its first Hyper Yo-Yo line-up. It is the first yo-yo model from Yomega to be released as a Hyper Yo-Yo product.

Description[]

The Hyper Brain is the Hyper Yo-Yo rebrand of Yomega's classic Yo-Yo with a Brain; it features the same atom design on the print of the yo-yo, but all the written information was replaced with "YOMEGA HYPER BRAIN" and "BANDAI 1997 (or 1998) MADE IN USA".

Just like the original Brain, the Hyper Brain had a rounded modified shape, a plastic transaxle sleeve with attached rubber o-ring, and a centrifugal clutch, which makes it return to the thrower's hand automatically when the yo-yo starts to lose spin.

Compared to the previous models of the Hyper Yo-Yo line, this was a major upgrade: The auto-return feature was a great novelty at the time, and made it a perfect choice for beginners who have no prior experience with yo-yos to start yo-yoing. In addition, the transaxle system made it spin much longer than any of the previous Hyper Yo-Yo models, making basic tricks easier to perform. Unlike the previous Hyper Yo-Yo models, the yo-yo halves could be twisted apart, making string maintenance easier. This way, the clutch mechanism could also be disabled by removing the rubber o-ring from the plastic transaxle sleeve inside the yo-yo.

The Hyper Brain comes in various body and cap color combinations. The body comes in clear colors, clear colorless, and even a glow-in-the-dark version. The printed cap comes in clear colors, clear colorless, glow-in-the-dark, and solid black. The cap where the clutch mechanism is located is always clear colorless. Also, depending on the chosen color combination, the clutch arms could either be colored white, black, or mismatched blue and orange.

A made-in-China version with redesigned arms would be released by Bandai for its third Hyper Yo-Yo lineup on April 13th, 2013 as the Wild Claw (Japanese: ワイルドクロー).

Special Editions[]

  • 1st Edition - When Hyper brain was released in Japan, the text that was printed on the side of the yo-yo had a font that was different from the more familiar version.
  • CoroCoro Comic Special - The same as the 1996 US version of the Yomega Brain, but with a full-color "CoroCoro Comic Special" design overprinted on top of the original print. Part of the original print can be seen on the text.
  • CoroCoro Comic Special Glow - A glow-in-the-dark version of the Hyper Brain. The "CoroCoro Comic Special" design was printed in black on one side of the yo-yo, instead of the typical Hyper Brain design. This yo-yo was not for sale, and can only be obtained as a prize for a raffle draw.
